The RCMP plan to use cell phone jammers, during the g8 and g20 summits. They want to create a bubble around the motorcade free of cell phone use, the specifics cannot be detailed out for security purposes.

The article also indicates, there may be a possibility of the jammer interfering with other radio communications, just in the bubble zone.

The toronto star reports...

Didn't IC ban cell phone jammers?

Hmm.. someone should try calling in a complaint.. If this was the USA, the FCC would be all over that!

cell phones arent the only form of communications. I bet the diplomats and VIPs are going to love being out of touch in motorcades too.

RCMP applies for an exemption when they use them.

There was a good article in the Star yesterday about them.

So uh, jamming these cellphones...that are around 850MHz...seems to me that's around the same frequency as the TPS system. That'd be interesting to see what happens.

Or maybe that was part of the reasoning that all G20 comms will be on UHF.

I would expect cellphone jammers to sweep across the 869-896 MHz spectrum (and the PCS band, etc.)

If they're not cheap junk, maybe they don't affect 851-869 MHz that much.

In Muskoka there are only 3 towers left that support the 800Mhz cell phones (now used mostly for Mike) and most that have the older 800Mhz antennas on the sites are now "Off Air" and don't even have the welcome channel(Control channel) working as 99% of towers here only support the 1.9Ghz PCS and for the G8 Telus has a strong tower 2Kms from the summit that has a large coverage area and the tower provides Wireless web to over 1000 users in its foot print and esental phone service to that rural area that have no landlines. The use of any type of jamming at Deerhurst or shuting the tower down would leave 100's without access to EMS, Fire, Police do the the geogaphy of the area. And under Canadian law Public safety comes first. Also most people attending the G8/G20 will need web access and WiFi freqs in many parts of the world are not the same as ours but the wireless web is (PCS) and will be the only option not to mention all the delegates needing to have cell access in the meetings. What they want to do and what will happen are two seperate things. This is the G8 and G20 and not the third world summits where the digital age is a way of life.

Few things to keep in mind:
1) The article said it's during motorcade routes, obviously the entire summit isn't going to be jammed.
2) I'm not a constitutional lawyer (and I doubt anyone roaming these boards are) but I think Canadian law puts continuity of government above your ability to dial 911 from a cell phone. I also doubt that cell phone coverage is reliable enough in Hunstville to be your only means to dial 911 (as some people living in urbanized areas are doing away with land lines).

Just my 2 cents.
