Re: Milcom fact or fiction?

I read somewhere - maybe it was here - that the impression that the 106 and 197 are poor perfomers on milair is due to the fact that both scanners default to scanning for digital on a channel before acquiring it. Since it takes a few fractions of a second to do this, some weaker milcom transmissions would be 'missed'.

The fix would be to set the channel to be analog only, and not let these scanners scan for the digital before acquiring it.

If this is a true statement, it should be added to the FAQ, along with the fixes for each of the big 3 programming packages. Any truth to this, or is it another urban legend?

best regards..Mike

My 106 receives milair great. There's not a lot in my area, but when there is, I get it just fine. Last summer there was an airshow in town and I listened to the Snowbirds doing their stunts without losing any transmission. I have it set on auto so the radio chooses the band but I have not noticed any loss of the beginning of transmissions if it is searching for digital first.

I seem to remember reading some posts about this in the past, but I haven't had any problems receiving military air signals. In fact when I drive home from work at night, close to midnight, my Pro-106 that goes mobile, hooked up to my Larsen, usually pick up mil air no problem. Unless you are referring to the search function, then maybe there is something to it.

I have all my mil air channels set to AM with squelch mode set to none. I haven't really seen much difference by playing around with that setting.

I seem to remember a post on one of these forums if you set the squelch mode to ctcss search, even though it is in the AM mode, it would bypass the digital wait time & immediately open the squelch.

I do as Clyde, AM mode, search NONE. I try to monitor milsats, FM mode, search NONE. I used my 106 at the Wings over Atlanta airshow last year. Worked great. Even have used my 197 at home when the mood strikes me. So, Mike, it is not fiction.
