re: win93 doesn't see the scanner

I need some help. My laptop (os Win7 home 32bit) doesn't see the scanner (a pro 2053) when I try to prog it with Wim93 with the Radio Shack programing cable #20-546 usb cable. Also the demo software that came with the cable doesn't see the scanner ether.

WIN93

Are you using the USB scanner cable or the one which plugs into a traditional COM port? I suspect you're using the USB version. Make sure you have the correct driver loaded for Win7. Go into device manager and see what COM port has been assigned to the cable.

What I do is go into device manager and open up the directory of COM ports. Plug the cable into the computer (don't plug the other end into the scanner yet) and watch to see which COM port is added. You might get an error and that's when you need to install or update to the correct driver.

If you do get a COM port, go in to WIN93 and select that COM port. Then plug in the scanner and give it a whirl. Good luck.

You didn't say anything about loading drivers. You must load the drivers, and check in Device Manager to see if the COM port it allocated is actually present and available, before you attach the cable to the PC. The load process is dumb - sometimes it will allocate a port already in use by something else.

Device Manager should be available by something similar to

Control Panel>System and Security>System>Device Manager

There was only 1 set of drivers, nothing denoting win7 drivers, xp pro drivers and so on. I set the com port in Win93 to 1, no go. An other person told me I had the wrong cable and he told me to get a "CI-V Interface Programming cable (serial port cable) for ICOM Radio CT17". I have an older 2nd laptop with a serial port on it that I use for my ham radio digital software. I was told that this cable will work for the pro 2053 scanner. I got the cable in the mail today. It is plugged in. I start the download from Win93. The scanner shows a memory dump in progress on it's screen but Win93 times out wile looking for the header and doesn't except the memory dump from the scanner. Back to square 1.

All you need to do is plug a cable into the scanner, even if the other end goes nowhere, and you'll see the "clone" message.

Yes you can use a standard COM cable since your PC has an old-fashioned COM port. You do need to make sure the correct COM port is selected in WIN93. It sounds like you do have that much correct.

However, you can't use just any old cable on these scanners. You need a cable that works with the PRO-93 or equivalent.

So which cable is the correct cable to use? the #20-546 usb cable in the store now. Or the older cable #20-047? Is there plains available to build my own cable if I chose to go that route?

You can use either of the USB cables, I've used them both. The key is installing the correct driver for the cable and your Operating System version. Once the correct driver is installed, you'll see it get assigned a COM port in Device Manager. Select that COM port in WIN93 and give it a whirl.

There are a couple of threads on the topic of making your own cable here on RR. I actually made my own which works with all GRE-made scanners. The earlier GRE scanners like the PRO-93 use a MONO connection, which means the cable sends and receives on the same wire. The new scanners use a stereo connection to separate the Rx and Tx signals. Look for a cable for PRO-95 or PRO-97 and I'll think you'll find it. The threads include several schematics.

re: win93 doesn't see the scanner

gmclam Does the pro-2053 use a stereo plug or a mono plug? I have the parts in my junk box to do ether one with ether a serial port plug or a usb plug. My main laptop a Gateway md2614u os win7 doesn't have a serial port. But I have an older HP omnibook ex3gc os Win 2k that does have a serial port. I use the older laptop for the digital ham radio prog's that require a serial port to trigger the transmit on the transceiver.

gmclam I just looked at the Programming Cable Pinout? thread. I don't have all those parts in my junk box. I will have to just wait until my next payday and buy a cable. Which cable should I get? The #20-546 usb cable (in the Radio Shack store now) or the #20-047 on line? and with a usb or serial plug on it?

Either will work, 20-047 is cheaper on line, than the one from the store, all it adds up to is can You wait for it to come in.

I got a new #20-047 usb cable. It arrived in the mail yesterday. I followed the instructions in the quote bellow to the letter about installing the driver. The usb to serial port is set to port 4. I set Win93 to port 4 (It won't stay on port 4 after I set it and close the config window). Win93 sees the scanner and starts to download on cmd but then stops and gives me the following message "looking for header" then an other window pops up saying "Win93 has stopped working, closing program." What now?

IIIIIIIIIBINGO!!!!!!! I got it working. The Pro 2053 does not use the stereo to mono plug adapter. I had the adapter plugged in. The driver install info was right on the money. Thanks

Now comes the part of fig this thing out. Programing regular frequencies is easy. But Kennewick city and Benton county have gone to a trunking system. I am not sure how to setup the scanner for trunking.

If the system you are referring to for Benton County is this one, BCES, no matter how you program it your Pro-2053 will not work. The new system is a P25 Phase I, digital, system, and your scanner is analog only. You could still monitor some of the traffic that is also simulcasted on the conventional frequencies, as well as a good number of the fire channels that still show to be conventional (not trunked and digital).

To monitor BCES, you'd need a digital scanner.

The ham operator that I got the scanner from told me that this is a digital trunking scanner. I had asked about that before buying it
