I had no idea that REACT and state patrol still monitored CB radio I just figured they phased all that out with upcoming of cell phones. I found out yesterday that REACT still is in the Lincoln area when I lost control of my car on the highway and ended up in a ditch, my car would not start and my <expletive removed> sprint phone didn't have any service. I put the CB to Ch.9 and declared an emergency after about 5 times of saying mayday I finally got a response. I told them my location and what the emergency was and in about 25 minutes a Lancaster county sheriffs deputy and a State Patrol officer were contacting me on the CB I directed them to my location and they called a tow truck for me and gave me a ride back home. I was really happy that there still is people who monitor CB channels. Unfortunately my car is totaled but hey at least I am not frozen to death.

So the person who answered your call on CB ch 9 IDed as a REACT member? Cool. Did they happen to use their REACT unit number or Team name? You said Lincoln but what State so that we can narrow it down?
Sorry to hear that the car is totaled but glad you are safe.

My scanner scans CB bands. What frequencies are Channel 9 and 19 on the scanner? I used to have a CB but I don't remember what they equate to frequency-wise.

Thanks....very helpful. I hear things on 27.105 all the time but it's hard to understand (maybe they are on sideband).

They never ID'd themselves as REACT it might have just been someone monitoring, State Patrol ID'd himself as NSP503 and the LSO unit was 902118, oh and I live in Lincoln Nebraska

I think they probably know seeing has how they can scan LSO and NSP and probably heard the units saying everything was ok. I could give it a try though dont see what it could hurt.

20 isn't a normal SSB channel, likely it's overmodulation or splatter from 19. Consider yourself lucky if you hear anything intelligable on any channel with those crappy "leenyars" and "power mics".

Frankly I consider anybody who can get a call through on CB lucky with some areas so messed up with idiots and others devoid of signals. Once upon a time CB was a reliable form of communication but has been a basket case since the '70s. That's why I moved up to Amateur Radio and have seldom been out of range of a repeater.

Glad you were able to get help when you needed it. People DO still use CB-9 and there is STILL a need to monitor it and I wish more PDs and REACT teams would do it.It's almost an effertless thing and the cost to get a basic mobile CB setup is only about $60.

Since 27.105 is channel 12 (not 20) your response makes no sense.

Hi Lou and all,

Just because I got the channel number wrong why doesn't my response make sense?

One thing of great importance I forgot but better late than never is NEVER, DO NOT EVER call mayday unless there is a clear and present danger to life and/or property! Just because you're stuck in a ditch does not constitute an emergency of this magnitude. A simply worded brief call for motorist assistance is all that's required.

I'm surprised the State Patrol monitors CB, the radios and antennas at the various emergency services locations in NJ have long been removed. I don't know if REACT is still active since it's been a long time since I was on the band but it's nice to know they're still out there. Staten Island (NY) REACT was well organized and efficient, so were the majority of "independents" in the area so hats off to what remains struggling through what have become adverse conditions on the band.

Well, I will admit it has been many many years since I did any CB'ing, but at the time Ch 12 was used by the SSB crowd. Of course that is when you had to have a license and there were only 23 channels but that explains my comment about your comment.

I am a long time REACT member and only ever monitored CB when doing Safety Breaks. I really don't have room in any of my vehicles for a CB. Its hard jamming a VHF/ UHF Radios in alone.

We always have at least one member monitoring 462.6750 in case of travel assistance or emergencies.

Every once in awhile you see the signs along the highway "CB CH. 9 Monitored" but not sure if by state police or local REACT teams. Glad to know teams still monitor.
