It looks like the Pro-97 (which is on sale for $150) will not be support rebanding. I was planning on monitoring the Cambridge, MA Police which is a analog trunked system.

It looks like some of the Police frequencies fall within the range of rebanding. Can someone confirm this. I just want to make sure I'm looking at the correct information.

The other scanner I have in mind is the BC246T which does support rebanding.

I would actualy spend the money on a digital scanner that way just in case theydecide to go digital you are already ahead of the game.

Any of the Uniden scanners are capable of rebanding whereas the Radio Shacks won't trunk the rebanding.

Its a very simple and easy switch to go from analog 800 to digital 800. Most if not all the 800 trunking radios out there are capable of doing both digital or analog.

Not quite true, bigblue. Insofar as the Unidens are concerned, the older trunktrackers (older than the 296/796) will not be supported. This has already been extensively discussed elsewhere, so I won't go into it here.

RS has not been very clear about which scanners they will support. The rumor mill says that the old PRO-92, PRO-433 and 528 will be supported; it's thought that the PRO-96 and 2096 may not need to be fixed, just reprogrammed. The story on the PRO-97 and 2055 has been fuzzy; at one point, RS was saying that a board swap would be necessary, but that might be old news and changed by now.

Keep in mind; no one really knows how the manufacturers will really support rebanding. If digital is in the future for your area, then yes, biting the bullet (and cringing with the credit card) and getting a digital scanner is the way to go.

On rebanding. I actually called Radio Shack the other day because I bought the Pro-97 and read so much conflicting information about upgrading it.

They told me it will absolutely not have any rebanding upgrade options. In fact, the model is being discontinued and it is probably the reason it is on sale for $150. Reedless to say, I returned it.

Radio Shack also said the Pro-97 is about the only model not upgradable. The other model I asked about was the Pro-528 which they said would be upgradable but they were not sure at this time if it could be done by firmware or board replacement. I was going to get the Pro-528 but it didn't have alpha tagging which is a must.

On Digital. Paying $500 for a scanner is just not realistic. This is over double the current price for non digital. All I want to do is listen to my city stations. By the time they go digital I'm sure the price of digital scanners will come down a lot.

I had questions regarding the rebanding issue also. I purchased a Pro-97 around a year ago. I went to my local RadioShack Distric office in Chattanooga today and the sales persons couldn'n even tell me the difference in the Pro-97 and the Pro-528. If the Pro-528 doesn't support text tags, it's not worth anything to me!
