SDS100/SDS200: Recessed white button Was: SDS 100 SCANNER

Can anyone tell me what the recessed white button on the back of the scanner is for. It's right below the belt clip mount, thanks

It's not a button. It's original purpose was a screw hole for a heatsink, but that got nixed so they put a piece of foam tape to cover the hole.

People will tell you it's to relieve pressure inside the case, but the case isn't sealed enough to need a vent.

Pretty sure you're talking about the vent hole. The white you see if just a fabric/plastic piece that keep it more of a "one way" air vent

Was told it is is a vent hole. They are all like that I guess

Since I'm not worried about the splash resistance of the unit I poked through the stuff covering the hole. I was surprised it isn't foam tape, it's just like a thin film tape. Since I've done that the unit vents heat through that hole and the case "seems" to be cooler.

I believe that hole is designed to allow for changes in barametric pressure, and protect against moisture.
Using the hole for a vent was an afterthought… there was a screw in that hole in the original design that secured a heat sink inside the scanner.

There’s reams of input from those in the know in previous posts and probably more in the blogs. That’s where I learned of this pressure thing. I don’t claim to be an engineer that can expound on how or why barometric pressure affects communications gear. (I would venture the atmospheric pressure probably has more to do with the transmitting section of a transceiver than the receive side but the case is obviously taken from Uniden’s the marine products division where it housed a transceiver. It does raise the question of what the marine radio used the hole for… a transceiver would most likely require a heat sync, more so than a receiver only radio. Can you tells us if the marine radio used that hole to mount a heat sync? A very real possibility given the fact that transmitters get hot and need to dissipate heat.

As for the case being pressure sealed, I agree. It’s merely moisture resistant, not pressure sealed. As for moisture resistant, Upman once replied when asked if he could confirm how deep the radio could be submerged and for how long, something along the lines of he didn’t have first hand knowledge, having never tried to vet the spec claim, and jokingly asked for the results should anyone try to disprove the spec.

It's not submersible, it's splash resistant rated at IPX4...IPX4: Is resistant to water splashes from any direction

Let me get this straight. Oh, this is rich. Now, we have a mystery portal on the back of this radio along with a filtering system with no official explanation. Nevertheless, I love this little bloke.
