It very much sounds like a connection - or perhaps more than one - is acting as an antenna and picking up the noise - or in the case of the frig, probably a solenoid or the motor - thus triggering the recorder. If this is the case; I'm not sure that putting a RF Choke on all the cables would help, but it's worth a try.

Why not move out of the 80s <chuckle> and use a software package to record? Depending on what brand of scanner you've got, there are several that could do the job. For example, IDTracker (for Uniden scanners), Scanner Recorder (for any audio source, really) are both free, and well respected. Our recording wiki has numerous possibilities. Here's the URL:

By asking, I was then able to see the related links!

You may still need to choke off your connection to your soundcard - MFJ and I think RS still sells kits for constructing a choke - but at least that would be a start. Using a good shielded audio cable, and keeping it short will be a start.
