LEADVILLE – Authorities found the body of a snowmobiler who fell through the ice at Twin Lakes.

Authorities say they found the body of 32-year-old Jason Wichter of Copper Mountain under the chilly water at about 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office says the snowmobiler and his friend were camping in advance of a 24-hour ice fishing contest when the accident occurred. Rescue crews believe Wichter may have been scouting out a good fishing location.

Authorities say the friend called for help around 9:15 p.m. Friday.

When emergency crews arrived they found a hole in the ice. About 20 searchers looked for Wichter Friday night, but were unable to locate him.

On Saturday, about 30 searchers, including dive teams resumed the search, according to authorities.

Authorities say they located Wichter’s body using sonar.

The Red Cross was on the scene feeding rescue crews from Lake County Search and Rescue, Summit County Search and Rescue and the Leadville Sheriff’s Office throughout the day.

Authorities are still trying to determine whether anyone was with Wichter at the time of the accident, and whether alcohol was involved.

Hartsel dive team and summit dive team where on scene. Body was found in about 80' of water.

Leadville Fire provided support with tractor trailer drawn decon shower unit that was used as a warming hut.

Initial call was at 915 for Fire/EMS. Switched to recovery operation at about 130am.

Machine did not "Fall through the ice", but drove off the ice into open water.

Sounds like there was some sort of 24 hour fishing derby going on?
