• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hello I have an RT-85 that is locked to Ham bands only. Is there a way to bypass that to allow programming of both VHF and UHF bands? We use them at my Walmart they bought replacement units but we can't program them because of the hem band lock. Thanks

These radios are only to be used on the ham bands of 2M and 70 CM within the USA. They don't have Part 90 acceptance for any business frequencies.

The Wal Marts in my area all use a Motorola MURS radio and your radios don't have Part 95 acceptance for MURS either.

Going forward your store needs to return these radios and purchase ones made for the service your store is using. Your employer could face fines from the FCC. Also these radios are made in China for hobby use and being light duty won't hold up too well.

And I'll go one step further. A company with Walmarts deep pockets shouldn't have to stupe so low (both ethically and legally) to have to resort to these measures. I know there are those that would disagree with me, but it makes me angry to see a thread such as this, and considering the source, even angrier.

I did see a store manager with a Motorola Mickey Mouse radio last week. Interesting. I'll have to check with my friend who works maintenance in the local store. He was using a old but nice HT1000 on MURS, but the FCC satellites can't detect the extra RF unless he goes outside. LOL.

Ya if it's set to low power it won't be seen outside the store.

Well with no help from the peanut gallery. I found the instructions how to set the radio to full band here they are.

Retevis RT85 Full Power Dual Band Ham/Amateur Radio, Dual Band, 200 Channels of Storage. But if you want to write frequencies other than 144-146MHZ and 430-435MHZ but cannot write the frequencies, you must perform spread spectrum. There are two methods, please do as follows:
The first is to turn off the walkie-talkie, press button 1 and button 7 at the same time, then turn it on
The second is to turn off the walkie-talkie, press the F key and the 1 key at the same time, and then turn it on again.

As I'm sure you know, there's a reason they are locked.
The RT-85 doesn't have any type certification on the transmitter. The only certification is has is for Part 15 on the receiver. That means in the USA they can only legally transmit on the amateur radio bands. As a ham yourself, I'm sure you can understand why.

What others were trying to suggest is that a company like WalMart shouldn't be using non-type accepted radios from China, essentially thumbing their nose at the USA/FCC, and expecting their staff to figure out how to hack them to work where they are not supposed to.
You may not care. That's fine. None of us are the radio police. But we're simply trying to make sure you are aware of the legal implications of using a non-type accepted radio.
It's not difficult, or expensive, to get the right equipment. WalMart should be helping you guys out more.
