How big of a difference is there from these 2 choices? The reason I ask is that I have a chance to get 100' of RG11 for free. If the LMR400 is MUCH better then I'll go that route but I would have to pay for it. From the research I have done, it looks like the RG11 and LMR400 are pretty close but I thought I would ask around anyway. I'm looking to replace that RG8x that I have running to a scantenna and a 800mhz yagi.

Get the RG11 for free. All my runs are RG11 on 700 MHz(about 50 ft each). I don't think you will notice any difference.

Really it depends on your application, and whether you are planning on transmitting or not.

RG11 is 75 Ohm, LMR400 is 50 Ohm, which can make a big difference IF you are transmitting.

RG11 to a Scantenna has shown positive results, and will probably be just fine on your 800Mhz yagi. It is well suited for < 1Ghz.

I've had great results with RG-11. None of my runs exceed 60 feet or so, but it's worked well for me, and the price is right, to be certain. LMR400 is great stuff, but you'll be fine, and you'll have much much better results than that old RG8X. Eww. ;)

Hey Dwayne,
Get the cable!. I remember seeing a chart before comparing the two cables and the RG-11 was not that far off with db's from LMR-400 per 100ft. I was suprised.
I wish I kept this chart.
Take care

Hey Dwayne,
I think I used this link to calculate the db losses:
http://www.ocarc.ca/coax.htm
I calculated it at 800mhz with RG-11 (not RG-11a) to TMS LMR-400 cable and the RG-11 was 4.48db loss at 100 feet and the LMR-400 was at 3.65. Not that bad at all.
Take care

Thanks tons!!! Whats even better is that I won't be using all 100'. I think its more around 50' per run.

How flexible is RG-11 compared to LMR 400?

Thx

That would depend on if you got the LMR 400 Ultraflex or not. The regular LMR is solid core and pretty stiff.

Well my buddy just dropped off a couple hundred feet of RG11. Now I just need to freeze my butt off and get it all installed.

Well its not quite that cold here (40°) but I guess I need to come up with some connectors/adapters for this bigger cable before I do anything. I'm guessing I wont find anything at Radio Shack so that leaves me with ordering from somewhere on the web.

Ya, I am actually going to start selling RG-6 and RG-11 patch cables on the website and using all compression fittings/snap and seal's on the cable with BNC/F connectors installed, so it should be good. No more adaptors and can't beat the connection and water seal with those connectors.

My buddy also gave me a hand full of compression fittings. He said they throw away anything under 300' and if I needed anymore just to let him know :)

Well a nice 50° day allowed me to at least get one run (to the scantenna) taken care of and I must say I am VERY pleased with the results. This was a MAJOR improvement over the RG8X. The bonus part is that he gave me a lot more cable then I first though. Heck, I hardly even put a dent in the roll. Now I just need to work on getting the 800mhz yagi that I built up and tested.

Good job man!. Did you build the yagi?
Take care
