I have a right angle adapter on my GRE800mhz antenna on my 996XT
Of course, it is loose (not the BNC on the scanner itself, just where the adapter turns) and keeps flopping over side to side and is a pain.
Is there an adapter out there that is snug so the antenna stays upright?
They all appear the same to me?

I have a couple right angle bnc adapters that did that, and there's a quick fix. A jewelers 1/16" blade is needed to gently lift the 4 sided inside sleeve outward slightly, this will tighten the adapter so its stationary when connected to a female bnc. 73, n9zas

Is there an version I can just buy? Right angled antennas without adaptors don't flop around like this. They are snug.

There's a silver plated sleeve which surrounds the white plastic bushing as you look into the center of the male portion of the bnc adapter. If you look carfully, its split 3 or 4 times on the sides. Using a narrow small screwdriver blade you can spread the those sections of sleeve outward a little. When you plug the bnc male into the female panel mount bnc on your scanner it should be a little snugger, meaning any duck you plug in the back should stand straight. IF you're not comfortable doing this, then simply run a piece of tape over the base of the antenna from each side of the rear panel of your scanner. 73, n9zas

Actually YES. MFJ makes a fold over antenna with a bnc which would probably work for you. I forgot they have that. 73, n9zas

OK. I just tried that. It didn't do anything. And as far as the tape goes. It's not moving around on the scanner bnc. So that wouldn't help with the issue.

Do you have a link to that antenna? Is it as good as the gre/RS 800mhz antenna? As so far that is the only back of set (with adapter) antenna I can receive my 769-773mhz freq with. I am in a weak area and this antenna hauls in 3 and 4 bars. Where others I have tried. Get 0-1. Do they ship to Canada?

I believe there used to be an adjustable gre/RS antenna for my situation but I likely have a better chance at winning the lotto than finding one.

Sooo are there any adjustable 800mhz antennas for the 996xt units (and other similar models) so I don't need to use these adapters? One with the same performance as the gre/rs 800mhz antenna.

Like I said you can fix your adapter in 30 seconds, but its up to to you in the long run. 73, n9zas

Rt angle bnc

just a note....

the rt angle BNC was(is) primarily for tight locations where a straight BNC would comprimise a cable. There was probably little thought to make it "tight" enough to not rotate ( I suspect that the ability to rotate when connected was designed into the adapter). It is a RF connector, not a mechanical antenna mount.

I have a colection of probably 25 plus various rt angles, about 60% will not hold an antenna vertically dependably.

You'll just have to try different ones.....

Most BNC connectors are brass under the nickel plating. Get the orientation correct then solder the rotating part to the fixed part. Use a big hot soldering iron and heat sink it with pliers immediately after the solder runs.
