Does anyone have a good suggested layout for System/Groups of roanoke airport to program into a BCD396T? I'm having a little trouble coming up with the appropriate layouts. I found the following info:

Airport Communications
UNICOM: 122.95
ATIS: 134.95
WX ASOS: PHONE 540-265-0680
ROANOKE GROUND: 121.9 257.8
ROANOKE TOWER: 118.3 257.8
ROANOKE APPROACH: 118.15 RY 15/33 (360-150) RY 06 (235 126.9 RY 15/33 (151-359) RY 06 (075- 339.8 RY 15/33 RY 06
ROANOKE DEPARTURE: 118.15 RY 15/33 (360-150) RY 06 (235 126.9 RY 15/33 (151-359) RY 06 (075- 339.8 RY 15/33 RY 06
CLEARANCE DELIVERY: 119.7
CLASS C: 118.15 RY 15/33 (360-150) RY 06 (235
CLASS C IC: 126.9 RY 15/33 (151-359) RY 06 (075- 339.8 RY 15/33 RY 06
EMERG: 121.5 243.0

As I'm very new to scanning, I'm having a little trouble getting it all organized. For example, I see Ground and Tower both two frequences, one of which is common. And the whole mess of Approach and Departure..

Any guidance offered would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

The second frequency is the UHF frequency, for Mil Air. I just programmed all the VHF frequencies that you listed into the same group. There is not so much traffic at KROA that you can't keep up.

Also, to add... In the evening (not sure the time) you will hear the same person handling multiple positions (TWR, APP/DEP, etc.)

Hey bbPhoenix, welcome to RR and the VA forum. Lots of good info gets passed here.

The common UHF freq for tower and ground is because of the relative lack of use of UHF. They have the same thing here at CHO. In fact, most of the time here, which I realize is even smaller than Roanoke, the VHF tower and ground channels are tied together and run by the same controller. The planes will come up on Ground when getting clearance and stuff but you hear the controller on both Ground and Tower.

Air traffic listening is a blast, there is always stuff going on even if it is routine. Check out www.airnav.com and www.flightaware.com for more info and flight tracking. I enjoy hearing a plane and then looking up where it is going, like the Gulfstream that left here one time going to the French Rivera with some lucky folks on board.

Also, if nobody has mentioned it yet, you should look into the ARC396 software from BuTel, it is pretty much indispensable. It will make it very easy to load the Roanoke public safety trunk system. I have a bunch of files for this area and some for Richmond for the 396. If you're coming this way you're welcome to ask for them.

Good to see some people close by.I live in buchanan if you know where that is.Botetourt County.Ive been trying to listen to RoCO/City trunking and have yet to hear anything.I can hear dispatch on the 48 band and thats about it.I have 7 banks programmed and never hear a thing.I`ve uploading the things directly from hear with the cable and still nothing.Roanoke is only like 20 minutes away.I would think i wouldn`t have much of a problem hearing anything from there.

On a duckie or using an external antenna? With an urban landscape and terrain, a duckie - which is a loss antenna to begin with - isn't going to hear that much. More specifics are needed.

Just a stock antenna is all i am using. Its not a duckie.I had an external antenna that i bought at radio shack. It was one of those window antennas and the sticky came off i guess and it fell of my window and the mower got it.

If you live in Buchanan, Roanoke is a tough shot. I remember trying to make a link on 959 Mhz work between Poor Mtn and Purgatory Mtn and it was marginal even from the peak. Somebody else up there used to have a 72 MHz link from Purgatory to Tinker Mtn and it worked OK. Too many big hills in the way.

Can you hear them if you drive down? At least you'll know your scanner is programmed properly.

another frequency to add to that list is

121.7 Clearance Delivery Link in Dublin, VA

I'm in Radford and can hear it sometimes ... also, on a good day in my truck I can pick up the Roanoke trunked system, but its weak and choppy, not worth it until I hit the interstate ...
