We've noticed a huge increase in rants and negative posts that revolve around agencies going to encryption due to the broadcasting of scanner audio on the internet. It's now worn out and continues to be the same recycled rants. These rants hijack the threads and derail the conversation. I'm running Ubuntu linux on a PC under VMware.

I am trying to use dump1090 (linux version) to receive mode-s data from an RTL-SDR device.

When compiling dump1090 on the vmware/ubuntu machine there are no errors. However everytime I try to run dump1090 it says it can't connect to the RTL-SDR.

It it possible to do this on a vmware/ubuntu setup? What am I missing?

While I'm not familiar with dump1090 I do run RTL-SDR dongles under ubuntu using gnuradio. At a guess I'd say your rtlsdr driver is not set up correctly. Try this:
sudo rmmod dvb_usb_rtl28xxu

im pretty sure ur rtl dongle wasn't recognized. did you install the rtl_sdr driver? if so, use the command "rtl_test -t" to see if it works.
