I'm running Ubuntu linux on a PC under VMware.

I am trying to use dump1090 (linux version) to receive mode-s data from an RTL-SDR device.

When compiling dump1090 on the vmware/ubuntu machine there are no errors. However everytime I try to run dump1090 it says it can't connect to the RTL-SDR.

It it possible to do this on a vmware/ubuntu setup? What am I missing?

While I'm not familiar with dump1090 I do run RTL-SDR dongles under ubuntu using gnuradio. At a guess I'd say your rtlsdr driver is not set up correctly. Try this:
sudo rmmod dvb_usb_rtl28xxu

im pretty sure ur rtl dongle wasn't recognized. did you install the rtl_sdr driver? if so, use the command "rtl_test -t" to see if it works.
