also running code could sometimes be referred to as running hot..ETMC on occasion transports people through my city from a city up just north of me in route to tyler when the helo's can't fly and they will notify the local PD when they are coming through and they will block off the intersections in town for them so they can get through quickly

They use all of the above down here:
"I'll be in route Code 3."
"I'll be running code."
"I'll be upgrading."
"Be advised there is an ambulance running hot toward the ferry."
etc.

ETMC Tyler Ops

If you were hearing 'running code' from ETMC Tyler, they were refering to running lights and siren. Also sometimes refered to as running hot and code 3.

Another one heard around here is:

"I'm stepping it up!"
