Toddler burned in apartment fire
Two people were taken to Memorial hospital today after a fire broke out in an apartment on the southeast side of the Springs. A 2-year-old suffered minor burns, and her 42-year-old grandmother had smoke inhalation.
It happened just after 11 this morning on Zebulon Drive.
"I just heard people screaming and panicking so I woke up and opened the door," said Edgar Delarosa, a neighbor.
Four people were in the top floor apartment. The other two were treated at the scene and released.
The Fire Department says two nearby fire hydrants didn't work so they used water from their trucks. They say it didn't affect their response time.
"It didn't come into play in this one," said Lt. Brian Keys, Colorado Springs Fire Department. "The fire was small, and they were able to get it contained with an apparatus, a booster tank, on the truck. The fire was knocked down in about 13 minutes."
Springs Utilities says one of the hydrants is privately owned; the other is owned by the city. CSU says they did a preliminary check of the hydrants today and will look into them some more on Monday.
"It's always concerning when we expect to the hydrants to be functioning and we don't have the water supply we need," said Keys.
The apartment is uninhabitable. Red Cross was on scene to help the family.
