Lots and lots in the 450-451 range. Start scanning about 30mins before the newscasts, you'll hear some activity. Most of it is cordination for live shots and cordination between choppers and the studio.
I never heard much about news crews being "dispatched". I'm sure they use cell / nextel being it's such a competitive market.

I have a few freqs, but I haven't confirmed any of them in the last 3 or so years.

vid cams

To my knowledge those are microwave and up in the GHz range. Way outta range of a basic scanner or affordable receiver.

As for the video from the helicoptors, I'm pretty sure those would be line of sight. You'd have to be right on top of them to get it. And I'm pretty sure the traffic cameras are hard wired then fed into a network. You can view them online through the CalTrans website.

Don't forget, the City's helicopter (Air1) has a downlink as well...not sure what the freq is though.

i ventured downtown sac a couple days ago (as well as the capitol) and scanned for media. I overheard KCRA (450.100 KCRA-TV tv ch 3 (base-to-helicoptor) (NBC)) dispatching a coptor. they attempted to dispatch via NEXTEL with the spacific location/whats going down so as to not let other stations scoop them, but they couldn't get good nextel reception (who- haven't heard that one before) so they reluctantly announced it on the radio.

kcra still got to the site first, but there was nothing really decent to report, all the others were still a day late and a dollar short.
