Back in "the day", the unit call numbers for patrol officers was the first three of the patrol district (xxx) followed by an even number starting at 0 for each unit in that district (I.e., 5310, 5312, 5314, etc.). Since we've had ProVoice decoding and I've started listening to them again, I've been hearing some odd numbers as the fourth digit (5311, 5313, etc.) mixed in with the traditional even numbers. Does anyone have any inside scoop as to what the distinction is?

At one time it was explained to me that SAPD at some point switched to using their shield numbers on the radio. Since they use 4 digit numbers, and their shield numbers are re-issued unless the officer is dies in the line of duty, the first officer to get that number since the new system was implemented is 0XXX. The second officer is 1XXX, third officer is 2XXX, etc. So for badge #240, the first officer would've just been "240" on the radio. The second officer would've been "1240". I'm not sure how accurate this is, but that is how it was explained to me by someone who had been an officer in the Bexar County area since around 1965

It is still done by districts but they have added more officers to a district. like district 3240 is one district as is 3242 but 3240 will have another officer assigned to a district. 3241 or 3243 for 3242's district. They are still very short handed as you can hear and routinely answer calls out of their districts I think the added officers help keep the officer assigned to the district in his area, but even that doesn't help when they get flooded with calls. I heard this from a PD officer last year.. So basically just added officers to a service area.

Attached is their latest map for districts. Not to detailed but shows basic districts and boundaries

Ah ok that makes sense. So they're trying to shrink patrol area for each officer in a district by giving them an assigned portion of it?

I think it is just adding back up and extra officers to handle the call volume. Same district sizes. Unless they have changed it in the last year which they could have because of population growth.

Good comprehensive list!

A couple more -- x000A/B/C is the shift lieutenant for each service area, x001 is the station commander, the other sergeants (property crimes and SAFFE) have the next few numbers, and then property crimes and SAFFE, and directed patrol officers start somewhere around x011.

0001 is the chief of police, 00xx are the rest of the command staff; I don't know for certain who exactly is what, but if I recall correctly 0009 is the PIO.
