There's been several incidents where County Fire has requested a TAC channel. I have everything programmed per the database but haven't been able to hear anything except for all of the command channels. Are their tac channels only receivable if you are close by?

Yes. Command channels are on repeaters, tac channels are simplex. Used by units on scene to talk to each other, and often just portable to portable (and thus, low power).

Thanks Kirk. Everytime an incident comes up and they request a TAC I can never get it. I remember reading about a Fireground complex in Texas that was just like that. The only way to hear any major incidents was to be within a mile or so of the units, otherwise you weren't hearing nothing.

Cheers!

For best reception, use an outdoor antenna. ANd keep in mind, the more your antenna can "see", the more you'll hear.

I'm on the second story so I would have to find a good mounting point. Then get an antenna, drill into my wall and feed it through. Would be nice.
