Saving the Name on a TH-9800

This is stupid question time!
I have a new TH-9800 which I can program manually, not a big problem EXCEPT I can't see how to tell it to display the alpha tag that I've set in menu 18.
I'm obviously both dumb and blind, but would someone please offer some help!!

Mine will not save a name or display either if done manually. I have to do all of it through the CPS

Thanks to the TH-9800 Yahoo Group.
Menu 18 Name - set the alpha tag (that I knew)
Menu 9 Disp.Mod - select FREQ or ALPHA (this I didn't)
As many times as I've gone through the manual, i didn't comprehend the Disp.Mod (Display Mode, duh!)

If you figure out how to turn off the "boo-deep" tone every time the squelch opens when scanning memories, please let us all know.

Can program the names but can not switch back to look at the frequencies. Help !!!
