I looked at this antenna in the store the other day, It has a fiberglass whip, and the ground plane.base is shaped wire. Lee, one of the sales persons stated this would be best mounted on a mast, and stated that aside from a discone this would be a good package as it comes with the cable. Did not check what type of cable was on this.

Nice..thanks!

So I guess a discone would still be better?I had an RS one that's seen better days. The price of this antenna had me wondering. It's cheap, but I liked the idea of it having some gain that the discones don't have. Can always get better coax for it too.Not worried about overload,as it's for an Icom R8500.

Decisions,decisions...

I'm here a lot
I wouldn't mind hearing about how well it performs.
Do you monitor Michigan stuff much ?
When I visit Windsor, I always wind up paying more attention to what's going on in Detroit. :)

I got the antenna today. It's similar to the RS groundplane for scanners.

It's made by Wintenna, info below:

Scan Master Multi Wave 30-1200 MHz
Our best base station scanner antenna. Multi wave resonant point for all scanner bands. Highest gain and performance on Lo-Hi / VHF / UHF / Police, Fire, Telephone, and Cellular phone bands. Available with in line 25 dB 12v DC amplifier.

Model 150 with cable 25' (7.6 meters).
Model 150A with amplifier and cable 25' (7.6 meters).
Model 150X with out cable.
***************************************

It's not much to look at.It already seems to perform better than my RS discone.Your mileage may vary. The coax is already connected to the base of the bracket. You just need to install the radials (solid aluminum),and attach the fiberglass whip. The coax is the weak link, it is RG58U.The antenna still seems to work better than the discone I had with RG8U.I will eventually change the coax on this one.Anyways, looks like this antenna is a low cost alternative to a discone.

I don't listen to Detroit at all,it's so busy there I wouldn't have time for local stuff.Anybody that wanted to would have a field day from Windsor.

Hope that helps.

Scan 15060

I have had one of these for a few years now. never did get it up for any great lenght of time. Landlord went Bolistic when I did. now that I'm in an Apt. I put it up , Im' on the 14th floor of a 16 floor building.Faceing S.S.W.
I did find a few cracks in the fiberglass. must of really dryed out siting in a cuboard for a few years. I just put clear nail polish over the cracks and it seem to be working just fine.
