When I turn the volume up on my BC9000xlt, It sounds like the speaker is almost shot. sounds like a screw is loose and when the audio comes in, its like metal is touching metal (vibration almost). Any suggestions? the screws have been tightened. The scanner is brand new.

Scanners usually have a fairly high power audio amplifier so that if you use it in say a truck with an external speaker, you can easily hear the scanner over the noisy truck cab. Unfortunately the scanner internal speaker cannot hack the high power and gives a distorted signal - moral of the story is to get a better external speaker or extract the low level audio into a mixer/stereo/computer speakers etc.

Internal speakers usually suck raw eggs, for sound quality and rugged reliability I much prefer Motorola. There's quite a selection on e-Bay and they're dirt cheap, Rat Shack doesn't even come close... sorry Martin.

Agreed. I fixed up an old somewhat broken Motorola speaker and it blows every other speaker I've had away. I can turn the volume on my 197 all the way up and the sound is still clear and crisp.
