I would like to know if my "radio shack", Pro-651" is compatible with Connecticuts CLMRN "phase2, project25, trunked system? There is no mention of this in manual and the scroll down menu, on USB programming, does not show it. Anyone know? thanks Markwed

I live in CT and monitor CLMRN.

The only agency you'll hear using that scanner is DEEP and maybe the buses.

I suggest you get an SDS scanner if you want to receive CSP.

I bought mine from Scannermaster.

Let us know if you have any more questions. Good luck!

just heard recieved a reply from someone to look up scanners on "Wikki" that accept Phase 2 . I know nothing of digital handheld units and need specific direction of where to look, or a link?? I cannot seem to find a "contact us" area to call? Can I "anticipate" a "Phase 3", in Project 25, or buy a scanner that can be ready, in the event that state of CT., goes farther with their radios. thank you......

If you look at the wiki link, scroll down, and it shows you a list of current phase 2 scanners. There are a number of them out there.

At this time there are only two types of P25 scanners, Phase 1 and 2, but with time and advances in technology (perhaps 5-10 years) I'm sure there will be changes to what is available to radio users.

The state of CT JUST completed transition to Phase 2, which is the latest technology.

As I replied in your other thread, I recommend the SDS 100 handheld to receive them.

If you want to save some $$$, a Uniden 325P2 handheld or 996P2 base will work if you don't experience issues with Simulcast.

You won't know whether Simulcast Distortion is an issue until you try the scanners at your location.

Here's a listing of scanners:

Ya I would say from experience if you are a "new user" I would definitely stick with a Uniden Home Patrol (like a used or refurb. Home Patrol 2) series scanner that uses the ZIP code database for ease of use. I'm not knocking Whistler brand as I actually have more Whistler brand then Uniden but from experience of gifting one to my sister (who also had zero scanning knowledge) she was much more comfortable with a touch screen 3 item selection then having to memorize a (30+ page) literal programing style and quirks system of a scanner that does not.

So;

low(er) cost, a few years old, still works like a charm = Uniden Home Patrol 2 - (NOT the Home Patrol 1 as it's not a phase 2 scanner)

super high cost, state of the art (most say completely overpriced(like me), but hey that's in a thousand threads elsewhere) would be the Uniden SDS100 handheld or Uniden SDS200 mobile/desktop.

thank you Doctordialtone!. Not sure what "simulcast" is, but I have seen it in this media! A little confusion on my part, so many (digital ) handheld scanners cannot accept Phase 2, unless they are the types you kindly showed me?(i did not see your last message on your link.) Thank you sir, for directing me!

While the Home Patrol 2 can receive P25 Phase II, and the touch screen makes it very user friendly for new users, it's cost is only $20 to $30 dollars less (depending on where you purchase) than the BCD436HP, the 436HP would be a better choice (in my opinion) than the HP-2. I have both models, as well as an SDS100.

While neither the HP-2 nor 436HP is a good choice in an area with simulcast issues, the 436HP is marginally better. Also, the 436 can get a paid upgrade if DMR or NXDN capability becomes a consideration. No such upgrade is offered for the HP-2. For the 436HP, you can use the keypad to enter or edit systems and channels. You cannot do that (on the scanner itself) on the HP-2 unless you add the "Extreme Upgrade". That does give you keypad entry, along with some other things not available on the 436HP, but those likely would not be of value to a new user. You can, of course, create, or edit systems in Sentinel for either scanner.

Other than the lack of a touch screen, the 436HP has more features and options than the HP-2. As Doc has already pointed out, if you are sure that simulcast will not be an issue, then the 325P2 or 996P2 are capable of monitoring Phase II systems as well as others.

Can anyone answer why the Radio Shack Pro 651 will not pick up APCO25 Phase 2?. What differentiates Phase 1 from phase 2?. This is Connecticut Public Safety. Thanks

The radio was not designed to receive that type of signal.

Phase 1 has one conversation per RF channel, Phase 2 is time division multiplexed, called TDMA, and has two conversations per RF channel.

I can confirm that you'll need to upgrade to hear most of the traffic on CLMRN.

You may still hear DEEP as they are Phase 1 still.

I use a 325P2, a 996P2 and an SDS200 to monitor the system.

Good luck!

many of us have made that mistake in thinking a Digital scanner opens everything. Here in Los Angeles that same Pro-651 is pretty much what you need since we don't have much "active" Phase 2.

Sell it here in the classifieds and get yourself a new one pal. Good luck !
