hi, im new to the whole scanner community. I was hoping anyone has any information on what would be the best scanner for my car. I do alot of driving in the GTA and central ontario. Im mainly looking for police and fire scanning. lower the cost would be preferred, im having troubles trying to even find local stores in pickering and burlington. Im looking for a scanner that can be easily un mounted at night, maybe a handheld with some sort of dashboard adapter. Thanks.

I would go for the Uniden BCT-15 or Uniden BC246T... I would recommend a digital scanner since most police departments will eventually switch over to digital systems (OPP is already digital), but you said to recommend something that is a low price. Both the Uniden BCT-15 and the Uniden BC246T you can get for about $250-$300 while digital scanners are about $600+.

I don't where to get them in pickering or Burlington but you can definitely pick them up in RadioWorld (steeles ave./hwy 400) and Durham Radio.

I agree with the previous posters comments, the digital is better for OPP and others may go to digital soon.. but they are pricey

Also take into account some cars are bad for interfearance/no signal passing through the metal .. if the scanner is on the seat you may not get anything. On the dash you may get something but make sure its secure. Others use external antennas but probably over your budget

Yes Durham Radio is a good source. Its a litte farther east then you are but worth the trip

you can also check out prices on thier webpage to see what suits your needs

A BCD396T is a great companion scanner to use in the GTA & anywhere else.
You can get one for less than $600 I think here.
The 996 Uniden scanner is also great (so I have heard) & GRE has come out with some new digital scanners recently. C heck out the GRE forums here to learn more.
Durham radio sells a clip for your heating vent, I look up the part # or give them a call.

If you wan't digital, which would be great for that area, you could probably pick up a pro 96, or something like that, on here where it says equipment for sale for about maybe $300.00 or so. Of course its second hand, being used but it would be worth the while like others said on this post. I paid about $700.00 for mine years ago, but its been worth every penny of it. Got my moneys worth out of it thats for sure. Oh $700.00 that was new of course.

I've got the 246T and the BCT15... the BCT15 (if you are going to mount it in your car) is an AWESOME radio! The speaker has a bit to be desired, but the screen, buttons, everything are great. The GPS feature is sort of neat if you have a use for it, but most importantly, I find that it works really well. I'd basically consider it the new 780XLT...

Agreed to the BCT15 is a nice scanner (as is its brother the 996 but over your price range).
Screen is great and easy to read if going mobile.

I think the BCT15 brand new can be had in the mid-high $200 range.

However if you want something to carry around this is obv not the one for you.
