A story in the Edmonton Journal reveals that a scanner was found in the trailer owned by the shooter that killed 4 Alberta RCMP members.

Sgt. James Martin said in James Roscoe's trailer near Mayerthorpe he found a police scanner and what appeared to be intelligence papers on officers in the area detachments including notes about cars driven by specific officers and cell phone numbers.

"When I first saw that information I certainly knew he had been monitoring us, for years really".

The postive thing is it appears the scanner was not used when Roscoe returned to his farm the next day and shot the four members.

Doubtful that the scanner would have made a difference based on what he ended up doing. And RCMP are well aware that PACS has been monitored by scanners for decades.

I could see this inquiry having an impact on AFRRCS.. giving it a shove toward getting built quicker. It remains to be seen if they'd encourage encryption for all RCMP comms including general patrol traffic. I hope not, but there's only one way to find out, and that's sit and wait.
