To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I will most likely get the no-affiliation scanner police here, but there's never a better way to learn than to ask...

Because there is a lack of hardware (one software solution exists, but it's quite difficult to wrangle) for scanning LTR (let alone Passport LTR) systems, I am considering obtaining the QA01839 "LTR/PassPort Enhanced Operation" option for my XPR 7550. Some notes I've read so far from Motorola:

- MDC, QC II, not available in application's conventional or LTR modes of operation
- expansion card draws additional current from radio battery

The aftermarket GOB requires the Scholer-Johnson LTR/PassPort application and winSJIppTRBO programming software - I've tried calling them up, but they're off for the holidays, and there's just no information to be found online.

Can anyone with more information about this impart their knowledge?

Additionally, I'm interested in scanning a single-site Passport LTR system... is it possible to use the board to do that? I have no understanding at all of how LTR works, let alone Passport, since there's little to no information about it online.

Thanks.

No because it has to be ESN Validated to even Unmute the audio. Or stun the Radio if so choose to

Hi rescue674aa,

Thank you for the information. So I see, there is a registered {Electronic Serial Number, Mobile Identity Number} tuple that must be registered with the system beforehand.

Therefore, being able to scan the system with my own native LTR/Passport hardware is not feasible.

Thank you again.

Not always. The Trident Passport controller is capable of entering the ESN but you don't have to use that feature. I had a customer that had hundreds of subscribers. They would occasionally need to rent extra radios. Had it been set up to require ESN's, I'd have had to enter them every time they rented.

On the other hand, the radios DO register using the radio ID and the scope of valid ID numbers must be entered into the controller. You'd need to program the radio with a valid radio ID. And, if there is a radio on the system, you'll create a conflict. Plus, when you turn the radio on it will key up to register meaning you're transmitting somewhere you shouldn't be.

To be clear, I am referring to PASSPORT.

Hello,

Duplicate Radio IDs did not seem to stop a radio shop setting up radios for the 2004 Democratic Convention in Boston. They used a Multi-Site Passport LTR system on 217/220 MHz and all the radios had the same radio ID!
Exclusive Private Wireless Report

I used the DOS programs LTRDump/LTRTrunk to decode the system. AAA was a big user after the convention, but the whole system seemed to go away at some point in the late 2000s or early 2010s.

Motorola bought the company that made passport controllers and kept the best people, but all support and docs were removed from the web. Most systems went bye-bye due to lack of support. If the controller is open, the system does no checking so any radios could have the same ID. They would still affiliate and send their MIN but the controller would not stop the transmission in the case you cited.
