Bravo! What a great post. Too bad it rings true.

Scenario: Jeffrey won't sit still in class, disrupts other students.
1958 - Jeffrey is sent to the principal's office and given a good
paddling. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
2008 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested
for ADD. School gets extra state funding because Jeffrey has a
disability.
I'll add a line:
2009- Jeffery quits taking all of his mind altering drugs then becomes angry and violent as a side affect. Jeffery then steals a gun and commits a school shooting.

That was the case well into the 90's, even.

Being assaulted is such a treat, though, isn't it. I wish we could go back to 1958 just for that!

Hyperbole is fun.

Government is too big

And we ask ourselves what has taken place between 1958 and 2008 except time...? The problem is that we have full-time PAID congress (and other politicians) who spend their time writing new rules and making government larger (that is when they are not investigating why some athlete took performance enhancing drugs). Larger governments need more money; and the government (at all levels) has evolved into a machine to make money for itself.

Here in California they are facing a huge deficit this year ($14B+) and there is talk of closing schools, laying off teachers, laying off law enforcement & fire fighters, and today there is talk of a tax on a barrel of oil to keep the prior from happening (in theory). I find it "funny" that there has been no talk of reducing legislator's expense accounts, reducing their salaries, or laying them off. What we really need is a government in which the elected are either not rich, or don't get rich from being in office. Perhaps a law that says legislators don't get paid if they have above a certain level of assets. Just thoughts.

Another idea; ALL laws must be manditorily reviewed at least once every 4 years.

And then the "omnibus review act of 20xx" happens every 4 years. Woohoo, they're reviewed.

Reviews might work as well as the reviews and pay raise approvals done by the Los Angeles School District Board of Directors. All the board members reviewed each other and approved each others raises.

and the students suffer from lack of class funding cause the paper pushers need raises. School board directors and board staff making over $150k for signing papers and talking about what color to paint the schools.

1958 class. Jeffrey goes to college, gets a degree, finds a job that requires a security backround check, passes with flying colors, and is given a job with great responsibility and rises to the top levels of the company.

2008 class. Jeffrey cannot get into college because he cannot focus on anything for more that 5 minutes. Finally finds a job.

"Would you like fries with that, Dude?"

Please, these area a little extreme are they not?

Here's a few that were left out:

1958: Johnny is forced to another school, because of the color of his skin. Unfortunately, it's not as good as the "white only" school.
2008: Johnny is just another kid on the school yard.

1958: Jose doesn't attend school, he works with his family in the field picking vegetables
2008: Jose is graduating from High School, and thanks to the federal gov't is getting a chance to be the first in his family go to college!

1958: Tim hears his Grandparents speaking their native language, and is downtrodden because he can not understand them.
2008: Through a grant from the Cherokee Nation, Tim is learning Tsalagi in school.

1958: Shelly is laughed at by her teacher for wanting to go to college, and be a lawyer. Her teacher tells her women only go to college to become school teachers.
2008: Shelly is on the path to becoming a successful prosecutor for the District Attorney's office.

I assume, though, that there are citations for each and every 2008 occurrence mentioned, including that they have occurred since January 1st 2008 and that each situation occurred as described.

Same for 1958.

Specific incidents, probably not. However, if one dug deep enough you could probably find one's close enough. I think it shows how far we've 'advanced' (sic) in the past fifity years.

While i think political correctness and all that has gotten out of control, I think that many of those scenarios on both ends are a bit far fetched.

Obviously you're not old enough to remember school in 1958 (or in the 1960s or 1970s, when I was in school - the '58 scenarios could apply equally well then).
