New SDS-200 user here...

I had a conventional system, programmed with all VHF Air frequencies, and Service Type set to "Aircraft" for each entry. I got the "Nothing to Scan" message and fiddled around for a while until stumbling on the fact that if I changed Service Type from "Aircraft" to "Custom 1" everything works fine.

Then I found a comment in the instruction manual that says you will get a "Nothing to Scan" message unless "Service Types required for channels must be set to ON". I don't know what that means nor where in the menu's or Sentinel Service Types are set to ON...

Any/all help appreciated.

It means what it says. The service types corresponding to said frequencies or talkgroups ("Tag" column in RRDB unless you change it to something else) must be turned on for the traffic to come through. If all service types in a particular department are turned off then you'll get "Nothing to scan" unless on a trunked radio system you have ID Search enabled to pick up unknown TGIDs with no applicable service type

nor where in the menu's or Sentinel Service Types are set to ON...
EDIT (menu) > Edit Profile. Service types tab. Place check box next to each service type then write changes to scanner

On the scanner itself: Press function key then zip/services key: Selecting Service Types

Nothing to scan message can display for a number of reasons.

If it works on Custom 1, then it seems when you added the freqs you did not assign Aircraft to those entries. It will default to Custom 1 when the user does not assign a service type.

Hook scanner to Sentinel and read the scanner. Then edit the entries in that fav list to reflect Aircraft service type. Then write back to the scanner.

Brilliant! Beautiful! Thanks Whiskey3JMC, you nailed it. I updated the Service Type tab in Sentinel Profile and that fixed the issue. I would have never stumbled upon that!

On your SDS unit:
Menu > Set Scan Selection > Set Nationwide Systems
Menu > Select Service Types

And don't forget to:
Menu > Set Scan Selection > Select Lists To Monitor
