My preference is a nylon case. I use nylon for the cellphones as well as the scanner.
Soft leather doesn't offer much protection and can tear easily.
Hard leather makes radio bigger and heavier but has best fall protection.

I also use the nylon case from Scanner Master. An issue with the sds100 is heat buildup around the antenna connection. This case will allow you to get the big butt battery fitting properly and if you leave the belt clip disc on that will allow ventilation for that little vent that is under the disc. Not going to get into another discussion about that vent but it's a good idea to keep it open. The disc will allow that to happen...

If you take the case on and off be careful pushing up from the base of the radio as you will surely break the battery clip which is thin as paper oh, I'm unsure if that's been repaired in production. Maybe somebody else can confirm that LOL.

It's Not Unusual for the radio to run hot and this is expected. If you're going to charge while radio is on, and leave the case on you may want to take the ventilation holes and take a pencil and enlarge them or even take a scissors and cut out more space.

@trentbob, I keep the hand strap that comes with the radio attached to the radio and use that to help pull it out of the case.

Yep that's a good idea, I squeeze the sides of the radio all the way down at the bottom and that helps. Another mod that I do is cut a square of wide Gorilla Tape and put it on the bottom of the case perfectly fitted for the base and it makes it very stable with the case on and standing straight up on a table, without the tape I found it toppling over.

I have both the nylon, as well as the hard leather cases, both from Scanner Master. You can't go wrong either way, but it depends on what you prefer. If you want better protection from falls, then go with hard leather. If you want a more lightweight, cheaper case, then nylon is the way to go. But again, either way, they're great and a lot better than nothing.

My hard leather has protected my radios during numerous nose dives. I strongly recommend the hard case, particularly if you are clumsy as yours truly.

I like the nylon case. I did take the radios clip button off of the radio for a better fit in the case. I also recommend leaving the wrist strap on the radio to help remove the radio from the case.
