Hello all, I am debating dropping some $$ on getting a SDS100 to listen to the state digital system and other area departments around me that are going to digital systems of their own.

But I was wondering if it is worth doing that now since I have been reading about public safety departments in CT suddenly going "silent"

I'm I reading too much between the lines or misunderstanding things? Or do I have a valid concern on that topic?:ROFLMAO:

Where exactly have you been reading that?

This is how rumors get started.

On this fourm (CT) actually, that's why I also was inquiring if I have been misreading stuff or reading too much into it.

Like you said, maybe it was just random rumors

Was just looking for other members thoughts on it (SDS100) being a worthwhile purchase. (y)

Currently, I’d say plunking down the big bucks to get a scanner that will work is acceptable. But, no one can predict what the future will bring. There are already agencies that encrypt full time and part time. And given that all comms systems become old and outdated, there are discussions on what should replace the old. That is probably most of what we hear about. New systems aren’t cheap, town and city budget discussions arise and are published as local news. There is also a new method of handling communications between the dispatch center and the mobile units (police & fire vehicles, etc.) which happens over the internet. It’s called First Net. And the comms are not able to be monitored. It’s not widespread yet, (I know of no First Net systems in Ct.) but it’s a new player in the game.

If you haven’t realized it yet, your post got highjacked. Getting back to your original question, I’d list all the agency’s you’d like to listen to and ask for advice on which scanners would work for you. Sometimes the most expensive ones can be overkill. Although, if one of the agency’s you want to monitor happens to be the state police, it’s probably a moot point because of something called simulcast (which can cause problems in some areas) and there are only 3 choices I know of that handle simulcast. Unication makes a pager style receiver and Uniden offers two scanners, all high priced units.

I have one and it's my daily driver. I use it from CLMRN to local towns, in other states even for hunting new systems including businesses on nxdn, dmr and analog.
It's a good scanner IF you plan on traveling with it. If not, go with a much much cheaper option like an SDR and a good antenna.

But I was wondering if it is worth doing that now since I have been reading about public safety departments in CT suddenly going "silent"

It's well worth the price if you really want to listen to something with simulcast, or just want the newest options for a scanner.
I like mine and it's well worth the price to me.

As for the last sentence, I'm not even going to reply to that because as someone else said, that's how rumors get passed around.

If an agency decides to encrypt, you'll know it when you can't hear them, or you'll see 50 posts asking the same question.

What went silent? In the past hour on CLMRN I have listened to Troop E, Troop K, Troop F, Troop E Tac, DEMHS InterOp, DEEP East, DEEP Marine, Fire Coordinators ... what's silent?
