I'm a new SDS100 user. I was able to do the initial setup of profile, favorites, etc., using Sentinel software, and the scanner works fine except for one issue.

When I connect the USB cable to the PC now, I get the 'Mass Storage' and 'Serial Port' selection, as expected. Then I press 'E'. After entering the 'E', the scanner seems to 'lock up; with the words 'Mass Storage' on the screen, and no amount of pressing any other buttons does anything to let me move on to scanning or menus or anything else.

I am able to write to and read from the scanner, so I know it's not the cable or USB port, and when the scanner is not connected, it works okay. Any ideas?

Solution
That's 100 percent normal. Mass storage mode establishes a direct connection with the pc for data transfer. While in that mode, the scanner is in a different state and it will not scan, nor will any scanner functions be available.

When in serial mode, all functions will work.

As Dave mentioned... That is normal operation...
In Mass Storage Mode it makes the scanner look like an external SD memory card reader...
That way the Sentinel Program can access it to load your programming...

If you are using other software... Example -- "ProScan"... You would use the Serial Mode on the SDS100 to access it...
In Serial Mode the scanner itself will funtion normally...

Also --- If don't press anything it will default to Serial Mode...

It's great once you learn it. I have the 200, same thing. I'm new to this, so I never started with all the older stuff you guys talk about. I do remember my dad having a crystal based scanner growing up. I enjoy reading about the older stuff, and normally look up the models when you guys post. I'm an older guy, but really enjoy this stuff.

Yes sir... It was alot easier back in the day...
If it wasn't for the software these scanners use it could be hours of programming by hand...

Interesting take on this. I picked up the software deal with the scanners pretty good anymore, still a ton to learn. I'm in design and stuff for work, but actually do 3D CAD stuff. Years ago, we did it with templates, scales, and hand drawn stuff. My big saying years ago, you'll get a smoke signal before an email. Now I email the girl at the front desk 20 feet from me. Crazy crap IMO.
