I have a number of Favorites Lists that I scan with specific Departments and Sites. I've used this method on my 536HP and HP-1 for years, and have never set a location. My location settings are blank, never been touched. I transferred these same Favorites to my SDS100, and made sure Service Types are enabled. Everything seems fine.

I have read the manual on page 17 all about Locations. Am I missing something by not setting or enabling some type of Location setting? I'm concerned if I start playing with Locations I'll pick up less? The scanner seems to pick everything up fine as it is.

Yes. You're missing out on one of the most powerful features of the scanner.

How it Works: Location, Location, Location

Location-based scanning makes it possible to scan in-range stuff without having to individually toggle every site and department in every system on and off. It's a far easier way to accomplish the same thing, and if you use GPS to tell the scanner where it is located, the scanner can continuously toggle stuff on and off as needed while you are traveling. If you're scanning the full database, you can go anywhere in North America and hear local traffic on the way without constantly messing with the scanner.

Hi Jon,
Thanks! OK, say I'm stationary in my home. Should I set a location or just use it without? If I should set a location, which one for getting max?

Your location should be set as close as possible to your actual location. GPS coordinates is best, but entering a ZIP code will usually get you close enough. You can set the Range setting in the scanner to control how far out you listen. Read the article I linked for a detailed explanation how it works.

I've read the article, thanks! Ok, I'll set GPS coordinates and set the range. One last question please, by not using location, aren't I just receiving everything that's possible? I seem to be picking up everything and getting out quite far. That's the part I don't quite understand, I'm not using location and its working really well.

If you are in a fixed location, using a favorite list withlocation OFF, you will scan everything in the list.

There is no need to use location in a fixed location - if you create the lists properly. No different than a non-loctaion capable scanner, or 10+years ago.

Mobile, new area, etc. location is the way to go.

Thanks to both of you, I have a good understanding of how it works now.
My 536 never leaves the house, but my SDS100 will, so I want to start to use and understand location.
