Hi All

I've had the SDS200 about a week and here are my thoughts for the forum:

The SDS 200 is a beautiful radio to look at. It is truly remarkable how far scanners have progressed. The screen is large, bright, and well viewed at most angles. The colors can be custom programmed and most menu items are largely intuitive. The keys have a good tactile feel and the knobs are similar, but not quite as tight as those on the 536. Overall it has the feel of a quality product.

The SDS200 is very easy to use. By inputting your zipcode you can be up and running in seconds. The Sentinel programming is terrific and was also easy to use. The ease of updating databases and firmware is a valuable aspect of the Uniden products. Much less "quirky" than some of the other radio products I use. If one is familiar with the X36 series the menus are largely consistent. The internal radio speaker sounds great for most base applications.

In terms of RF and digital performance I would offer the following:

Sensitivity..On analog the radio is at least as sensitive as my 536. In fact some marginal signals are indeed stronger on the SDS 200. The downside here is that the SDS200 (or at least my unit) is more susceptible to intermod. I am not an RF engineer nor do I understand all the idiosyncrasies associated with SDR radios..but the 536 is definitely the winner in the "selectivity" arena. This is not to say the SDS200 is anywhere near unusable..but on occasion, on some frequencies( noted on the UHF T Band), comms are annoyingly disrupted by the intermod The intermod is a non-event with the 536. (FWIW my monitoring location is a high RF location on the NJ Bayshore with NYC visible). Interestingly..Uniden offers filters in the menu but it is not really clear what they do. None of them eliminated the intermod. Hopefully this is something that can be addressed in future firmware updates.

Digital Systems.. Overall the SDS 200 is more intelligible and easier to listen to than the 536. I haven't done the technical analysis performed by others on this forum but the thing generally seems to work. As an EMT I am probably more comfortable with my dedicated radio to get calls..but that is not what I am using this scanner for. The SDS 200 is a very broad band radio doing a lot of processing and covering a multitude of systems. Interestingly I have picked up talk groups that I dont recall seeing on the 536 (could be programming but I doubt it)

Other items.. Humm...not really noticeable on the internal speaker for my unit. More noticeable on an external speaker..definitely there but for me it was tolerable although probably should be addressed. Keypad lights..yes they are dim and should be a little brighter. Fortunately the materials used on the keys pick up even the slightest light pretty effectively.

Impression Summary.. While not the perfect radio for reasons cited I am non the less happy I got it. Uniden has come up with a very innovative product with lots of features that I am enjoying a lot. Hopefully they can address some of the issues on the forum as they have with past product introductions as they appear to be valid concerns. 73.. Warren

I plan on getting the sds200 at some point down the road. The mention of intermod is interesting and was wondering if that be an issue in a rural community like mine

Also curious about the scan speed compared to the 996p2

If programming is the same as SDS100, you should be able to remove Battery and replace with something else. Or even shuffle info around. Also look for RSSI Display. This will place a Bar Graph for RSSI signal strength. This is found in Display options > Customize > Set Detail Trunk. You can do serious Display tweaking to your personal likes

how do you MOVE the rsi and turn it into a bar graph? playing around i am not seeing how to do this. thanks

NEVER MIND, figured out how to turn it into a graph. takes up more space, large bar graph. i like it better anyway. now to fig out how to move it to someplace else, like TOP.

Still having fun with mine. Customizing the display is one of the coolest things about this scanner. The possibilities are endless.

agreed. i have used some black on black to get rid of some #s i dont want to see in the detail move, clearing up the screen some. some i really just dont know what they mean and i need look into them more, but i can always bring them back. i am headed to vegas and will bring this AND the 436 in my carry on. be great there in the hotel. i have not purchased the DMR upgrade yet for the 200, but i have it for the 436.

Vegas is fun scanning, especially DMR, which a lot of the hotels and casinos have went to. Local PD (Vegas Metro) I am not sure of anymore, I heard they encrypted but not sure if that is implemented yet or not. Even if you find that public safety is silent, there is so much more in Vegas to monitor.

i will be staying at the circus so hopefully much of the DMR will be copyable on the 436. already have it programmed and ready. to bring this back to this forum topic, IF the dmr is copyable on the 436 i will upgrade to DMR while there and compare. if not, i wont. dont need it for home with the 436 having it.

For what its worth, I just called HRO in Atlanta and Milwaukee. The 2 people I talked with were surprised that there was any problem with the SDS200. Both reported that there have been no returns or complaints on the units shipped - so far.

The Atlanta store sold all of their allocation and is awaiting a new shipment. Milwaukee had 6 in stock after I placed my order today.

I believe that some of the units shipped have a problem and hopefully it was confined to a small production run.

If mine has the same issues when it arrives in a few days I will report back.

I purchased two from HRO/Woodbridge (VA), both had the digital noise issue in the audio (internal and external speakers). Instead of returning, I decided to debug and fix myself. I am probably not the norm though.

No comments from UPMan about all the performance issues people are complaining about? And why is this thread hidden away in the Tavern?

May I ask what did you do to solve the problem and how well did it work in removing the noise? Like you I would rather repair it myself than return it if it can be corrected with average bench skills.

Thank's

I know Uniden is working on a fix for this hum issue but I'm curious...was this not present at all in any of the beta units? Did something change between the manufacturing of the beta units and the manufacturing of the mass units? I guess the answer is probably "well, obviously..." but we didn't hear about this at all from any of the beta testers so either it was present and they were told to not say anything about it or it wasn't present at all in the beta units and a design change caused the hum.

Either way, it sounds like Uniden is working on a fix but it's sad that another release is plagued by another issue...

Wareen--I'm in a strong RF area, I personally would NEVER pay $699.95 for a SDS200 with intermod issues. That's totally un-acceptable and ridiculous! I highly doubt a software update will address that issue. This is the main reason why I would never buy something that just came out. Uniden's engineers have a lot of work to do on this "TOP OF LINE" base scanner with all the bells and whistles and to me, again rushed through the production line. At $699.95, this is NOT just a drop in a bucket in this current uncertain economy. If anyone doesn't like my posting, too bad!

If it's true intermod, which is a signal formed OUTSIDE the radio there is nothing any radio can do about it. If it's some internal mixing issue that is another issue.
