What are the "main" - Shoals area Freqs that most eveyone listens too in Lauderdale and Colbert Counties - it would be nice to have a list from those who actually use\listen to the freqs and maybe the type of equip you use too??? I am considering buying new equipment - or reprogram what I have if it works - going to set it up and try it out - from prelim tests it seems to work ok. (Rad-Shack Pro-2006) - then again who knows if it will stay up very long it has been boxed up for eight years. From the forum most everything seems to be encrypted or trunked - what's left that is worth listening to?? - Thanks! JSS

Although I don't keep all of these scanning at any given time, here is what is in my Pro-97 "Home" bank. A very stripped down version resides in my vehicle scanner. My vehicle and home scanner(s) also contain MS & TN freqs. The Pro-97 also has TN-MS-AL "blend" bank for traveling.

Another freq in my home scanner is Vulcan Materials Cherokee - 461.175. As I live near them, I like to know when they blast rock!

Channels in my non-alpha tagged scanners tend to correspond to channel numbers or county prifix #s for "have quicks". For instance, Colbert SO is programmed in channel 20, Franklin in 33, etc.

Jeff, TVA Police are digital and encrypted.

Rick, 417.650 is, more specifically, TVA Wilson Hydro Operations. Did you hear them go into emergency mode and evacuate everyone to the eighth floor about three weeks ago? I think this might have been a test.

Paul,

Unless something has changed you should hear ALDOT Montgomery on 151.130 tone 210.7(I think). Either in May or June this year I heard ALDOT Montgomery using 151.130 and 151.070. I wrote the date and tones used down but I can't find them now. I know here over on this side of the State, the VHF frequencies are a good bit. 156.195 (179.9) is used by the Hollins Crossroad office every day. Check the list that Jason (Kingpin) posted sometime back, it appears to be pretty accurate.

In District Two of Northwest Alabama, AL-DOT uses:

151.055 - Simplex
151.130 - Repeater (automated bridge conditions during Winter weather)
151.010 - Simplex Unit to Unit / Construction Zone traffic details

Some urban areas have repeaters on other frequencies as needed but to my understanding 151.130 is used statewide with different tones.

Although most DOT supervisors have Southern Linc, the guys on the pavement (pun intended) use VHF a good bit. For crews working outdoors, the base keeps them up to date on weather conditions when storms approach.

Winter weather will most certainly bring about more activity on these frequencies.

Thanks for posting these frequencies, for the "Shoals area". Although I am in northeast Mississippi, I am frequently in the that area.

Thanks!

You can forget the TVA Police. I think it's a 400 MHz trunked system now but it's 100% encrypted 100% of the time. :(

Thanks for all the replies - I went to the Hamfest looking for the equipment mentioned in this forum none could be found that I was satisfied with so will go to the net and Rad shack - not certian my old machine will hold up after being on the shelf for eight years and would like to upgrade anyways to something that I could even use mobile - however I am told that mobile use is now illegal in Alabama ???? by a State Trooper but he could not show me the printed law. I tried to find it online. Oh well - thanks for all the posts - back to the drawing board - JSS

JSS,

Unless something has changed in the past 2 years, I think the Trooper was bluffing you.
When I left/retired from the Troopers back in Sept 2005, I didn't know of anything about mobile use being illegal. If mobile use is now illegal then I will be under the jail. My car is the proverbial pin cushion with all of my antennas. And so far none of my Trooper friends have mentioned anything to me. If I hear anything I will pass it along.

EGO head??? I have my car full of radios too - and ears that don't stop too! :) JSS

I guess build the next prison on top of me - I was told to remove all my radios - but I have all my paperwork in order - and got more today from the federal level - signed by the Boss himself the pres - seems they fall in DHS too. So they fall in the local - state and federal level and will stay in the vehicle. LOL - what is funny is more radios are going in later this fall - and it is not me putting them there!!! - and a notebook full of paperwork - JSS

The only law about scanners in Alabama is that you can't use them to assist you in commiting a crime, e.g., when acting as a lookout for drug dealers and that sort of thing. Otherwise, you can use them anywhere you please including in your car. If you run into that Trooper again, ask him what section number of the 1975 code this "prohibition" falls under. I think he's blowing smoke on this one.
