Thanks Mike

I think you guys want to look at the DX-394 before suggesting replacements which would actually be downgrades. The OP wants a communications receiver, not a portable.

Unfortunately there aren't many new tabletop comms receivers made these days. The Icom R75 or the Alinco DX-R8 would fill the bill but may be over your price bracket. FleaBay has some bargains but there's a risk attached! The next option is an SDR but they're even more expensive - the SDR is probably the cause of the demise of tabletop receivers IMHO.

The DX-394 was a "desktop" communications receiver. It was not particularly good but was not bad either. So my assumption is you want another desktop to replace it.

Either the Alinco DXR8T or the Icom R75 will do everything the DX-394 did and more, and do it better. They are both the closest things made today to that radio. Neither are the exact same size as the -394, but they are both close in size. Size should not really matter, but the R75 is 3 1/16 x 9 1/2 x 9 1/32, so less than 1/4" difference each way. The Alinco is slightly larger, at 3 5/8 x 9 7/16 x 10.

The Alinco is the less expensive of the two, but in my opinion the Icom is the better radio. I was going to get an Alinco, but after testing the two radios side-by-side I deceided on another R75 instead (I already owned one R75 at that time).

If I was replacing a DX-394 today with something new it would be the Icom R75. If you allow for used radios made after the DX-394 the choices run into the dozens, easily. Also, there are other options, some much better, on the market, but the Alinco and the Icom are the closest to the DX-394.

T!
