Will the BCD436HP work with a earbud with a mono 3.5mm plug. I have been told that the mono plug will cause damage to the earphone amplifier. I have one but am afraid to try it.

If not does anyone have any a recommendation for a listen only single earbud with a stereo plug.

Thanks, Bob.

Mono plug is bad, it shorts out part of the audio. Use stereo earbuds and only put one in, or get a stereo 1/8" plug and solder it on to your mono earbud.

OK. Thanks. That's what I have been told. Someone has to know of a single earbud for one ear with a 3.5mm stereo plug. I have searched and cannot find one. Regards, Bob.

The only ones I can find are with a microphone. Do you have a P/N or source. Thanks, Bob.

I have used a mono earpiece on my 436 for years and have had no problems at all. The one I have is the ScannerMaster Listen Only Earpiece, which is likely the same as sold many other places. I also have used a couple other mono only ones and they work just fine. There is nothing in the 436 owner's manual that says to use only a stereo plug.

That said I have also used stereo earbuds, like the Apple iPhone ones. The Apple ones have 4 connectors but are arranged so that they work with the stereo connector on the 436.

PS: I have also used both of the above on my SDS100, 325, 125AT et al...

Page 3 of the manual: "You can use an optional 32Ω stereo headset or earphone with your scanner." Mono plugs may not be explicitly forbidden, but they're not recommended, either. And IIRC Upman has also recommended only using stereo plugs in the headphone jack.

Thanks. It's looking like I am going to go that route.Bob.
You can get cheap ($1.00) stereo ear buds at Walmart. Just cut one off.

I sure wish Uniden would make it official. I asked Scannermaster about their P/N 27-571155 earbud for use in a BCD436HP. The man I talked to said it had a mono plug but he has used it for years in a BCD436HP with no problem.

I think the safest way is to use a stereo earbud and cut off one side.

Thanks for all that replied. Bob.

That's what I do. I go to Dollar Tree and but the most comfy looking stereo headphones and cut one off and cut one off. If I can i get a piece of shrink wrap and put it over the area where I cut the one off. Works great!!

Please, don't tell my 436HP that because it likes them. They work great. I use two on the road, one for CB one for 436HP.

Since I am "stone deaf forever", using regular ear buds tends to exacerbate my tinnitus because they tend to direct sound into the ear canal. These have a larger speaker and don't make your ears ring.
