Please forgive the newbie questions but why can't I just buy a 3.5mm mono audio cable and plug one end into the ear phone jack on my ( Uniden Sportcat/Bearcat twin turbo SC150 ) and the other end into my line in OR mic on the back of my computer and the broadcast to my station?

Why do the instructions tell me to buy ( 2 ) specific different cables from radio shack?

THANKS!!

I have no need to record my own broadcast ( is that what you meant? ) I just need to be able to up load the scanner traffic to my live feed on the internet.

Should I use the LINE IN or the MIC jack??

I should mention that I have a different scanner that I listen to in my living room that is always on, the scanner I will be using to broadcast will always be dedicated to the computer.

On a side note I just tried the line in jack and can hear my scanner instantly thru my speakers regardless if I am uploading or logged into my station, then I tried the mic jack and have DOUBLE TALK everything is being repeated when listing to my own station, can you not listen to your own station from the same computer the scanner is broadcasting from? I hope that all made sense!!

Inputs and streaming

Should I use the LINE IN or the MIC jack??
There are two opposing issues here; the LINE input is a STEREO input while the MIC input is MONO. The headphone jack of these hand-helds work with stereo headphones, but not ideally with sound card inputs.

Another problem I have run in to is that the headphone jack does not have a direct ground. To get around this I used the ground from the antenna (and not from the headphone jack) and an isolation transformer. When making custom cables I could wire for both left and right channels of the LINE input (ideal) but the sound cards I am using only have a MIC input. So I designed in some attenuation through the transformer and used the MIC input.

There is a delay. Some of it comes from compressing the signal and some from streaming. You do not want to listen to both your "audio input" and your stream. Pick one and listen to that. The audio input will be live while the stream will be delayed. Even when I listen to my streams directly (not through RR) I have about a 30 second delay. And since WinAmp won't stay connected to RR I've given up on listening to my actual streams. However, I do use a digital level meter so I can "see" the audio I am broadcasting.

Generally speaking, you can.

For my live feed, I have a BC246T connected to the mic-in jack of my EeePC701 laptop via a mono (2-conductor) audio cable and it works fine. I originally had it connected via a stereo (3-conductor) audio cable and it worked just fine with that as well.
