USCG has remote sites up and down the Mississippi River and other inland waterways. The radio you heard probably wasn't in Memphis it was probably one closer to you.

Hey Tom, that makes sense..but I am a long way from the Mississippi river
.also I am getting tremendous skip and its pretty bad that I have to turn my scanners off..

Thanks bill , looking at the maps that Tom posted, is vicksburg a tower station?

There is clearly unusual skip Behavior today. I'm along the Delaware River between Trenton and Philadelphia and our station is Sector Delaware Bay. in good conditions occasionally I get Sandy Hook or even Atlantic City with a VHF UHF 800 ground plane on the roof. I never get Long Island New York called Fire Island on the South Shore closer to me or North Shore across from Connecticut called Long Island Sound. I am not receiving Fire Island, Sandy Hook or Atlantic City today but Long Island Sound is blowing my doors off with five bars and clear as a bell on channel 16. Long Island Sound is a separate body of water separated by Long Island and there would be no remote locations closer to me. Interesting, I'm only used to shortwave radio and 11 meters Citizens Band skip.

Yes. All the dots on the map are tower locations.

for the OP: Sector can select One or All of the Towers for broadcasts, all depends on who the Operator is....
