Many start off with the UASD (downloaded from the Uniden website), as there's many files floating around in that format; the champ seems to be ARC246 - once you become a premium subscriber, you can download data from the database. I wouldn't ignore the freeware BCTool, either (I know Rob is working on getting RRDB import) and Freescan (also freeware, and has a copy/paste utility that grabs data from the database, as does the commercial Scan Control package).

By the way, that link also has the link for the Easier to Read manual as well as the DMA FAQ - I'd bookmark the manual, as I understand the Uniden version is pretty crummy

ARC246 from Butel Software is pretty much the software to own if you're going to purchase something for programming the 246T, but it's also quite capable of controlling it. I've been using it for quite some time and I highly recommend it as the best overall product you'll find for the 246T.

A free alternative that I like a lot (I own ARC246 already, btw) with a slightly different layout for control purposes is Scannerbase's excellent BC246T Advanced Virtual Control. I like it a bit better for controlling the 246T since it's a single window - that's one thing I wish ARC246 could do, basically one window that does everything. When you run the virtual control aspects of ARC246, it creates a separate window.

BC246T Advanced Virtual Control is more for controlling than programming the 246T, so that's the primary distinction. I use ARC246 for the programming and BC246T AVC for control, basically, and rarely do I ever have them both running at the same time. BC246T AVC can change between several different sized windows so it can take up very minimal space on the Windows Desktop - even just a single tiny line of text noting which TG/Frequency is being monitored at any given time. It'll also record audio too and tag each file with the appropriate label as long as you have your soundcard set up properly and the earphone output of the 246T piped into either the mic or line in jack and the Windows recording mixer is properly set up also.

Overall, for a free product, it's pretty wicked stuff.

www.butelsoftware.com for ARC246 information; there's also a Yahoo group specifically for ARC246 located at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/arc246t/ - the primary 246T Yahoo group is located at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BC246T/ also.

For BC246T AVC check out:

If you have questions, just ask... and welcome to the 246T owner's club. :)

ps
And make sure to get that thing updated to the latest firmware which is 2.10 as of today. Have fun, always...
