Soldering Iron Recommendations

I'm in the market for a new soldering iron, and would like some opinions on what you guys use and prefer.

I'll be using it for general electronics work, including circuit board repair, attaching connectors, etc. Usage will be fairly light. Need something basic for occasional use that won't break the bank, yet is quality both in build and performance. Something that is light and easy to work with, yet is robust enough to get the solder flowing quickly without damaging sensitive circuit board components.

In the same vain, if anyone has any positive experiences with where to buy it online, do tell.

I should also mention that I have no experience with a soldering gun, just irons. If anyone feels a gun would be a better choice, please explain why. I've shied away from them because they seem a bit bulky and difficult to control for small detail work, as well I've heard they usually put out too much heat for sensitive component work.

this is the one that I have used most and I really liked it ... I'm not a fan of the guns for precise work like pcb stuff, imho of course

Another vote here for Weller.

I own both an MT1500 and a "always on" iron.

Spend some money and get a good one. You'll be glad you did. Whatever you settle on, make sure you get tips that are interchangeable and are of the threaded kind. Set screws just don't get it done.

What ever you do don't get the one that sells on "As Seen on TV", the one that's battery operated. I don't remember the exact name but this is a really cheap piece of crap. I was foolish enough to buy one and the tip broke the first time I used it.
