• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Someone needs to build a base station again. Miss my GTL2000.

That “someone” can be you.
Here’s a suggested start

TAC COMM Tactical Radio Carrier

I have several of these. Arrange what configuration you wish.

Given that a NIB “base station” (mobile radio + power supply) was sold last year for $700, you‘re well ahead by DIY.

They’re a bunch of nice guys to deal with. The carriers come in a couple of sizes and can be of a higher-quality set of replaceable components.

Mount stuff inside and out. Keep it portable, or build an enveloping furniture-quality wood slip case to go around it.

Having one to play with will get the juices going.

Tactical Radio Carriers

This is my approach for the as-yet unbuilt home base station and the rig for my pickup. Both of which have gone through a few variations of what I wanted to include and where I’d mount it.

And for an AM/SSB + Amp I put together for my son last year (so he could install & remove from his SUV). That one slips into a book bag.

Don’t limit yourself as an ICOM 718 & a 30A Astron power supply + LDG Tuner could be the basis for your base station using the TRC-2

Your base station can fit a variety of radios and/or scanners.

I ran across the TAC COMM radio carriers at the Tucson, AZ amateur radio convention and bought a carrier that fit my Elecraft 500 watt amp and matching antenna tuner stacked together. Very nice quality products.

The new FM CB's won't last more than 2 or 3 years. People love their cell phones and that's going to be far more popular with app's like Zello.
Manufactures want to see if CB takes off again before investing in new radios. There has to be a demand before they will build.

There has to be marketing projections before they will build and I believe most of the major mfrs will introduce new models with FM. After that they will analyze sales and determine where to go from there.

In the mid 70s I worked for the largest CB mfr in the world and was privy to some of their marketing schemes and got to see and test all the new models before they hit the market. I worked there through the announcement of 40 channels and the insane paced introduction of new 40ch models and the race to market to try and cash in before the other mfrs. At some point the bottom dropped out of CB and the largest CB mfr in the world folded and became a very small land mobile radio company.

The price point of a proper 11 meter (or export) base station would probably be very close to some of the "entry level" all band ham transceivers (Icom IC-7300, Yaesu FT-991, etc.). With the extra capabilities of the ham units and most are easy to MARS mod that's the way I would go. Many willing to spend upwards of $1K are looking for the most bang for their buck. It's alot cheaper and easier to slap a power supply on a good mobile radio, hook up your antenna and start talking! Just my opinion and like we all know opinions are like..............

I snagged an Ft-991A for $800 and it has unbelievably good DNR on 10 meters which is right next door to 11 meters/CB, but I have not done anything to it to enable it to transmit on 11 meters. I have dropped down to listen to 11m and it is phenomenal compared to my $150 CB for receive. From what I understand it's easy to get the 991 to xmit on 11 meters with a simple internal mod but that's not my kinda thing.

I myself would like to see a new base radio released. I purchased a Uniden 980 SSB when I was released. I would love to see it in a base.

however, as others have said it likely won’t ever happen, an overwhelming majority of the market is mobile and the demand for home units is almost non existent to the general public.
