To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi All,

I just recently purchased a VHF Spectra Astro-P25 radio off of EBAY.

My question is this, How do I find out what version of RSS I would need to read or to write the codeplug?

I tried using Versions 09.01.10 & 01.01.00 and it reads "Codeplug to new for this application.

I've even tried pressing the home button 5 times after powerup to see if it tells me in there.

Thanking you in advance
Shawn

If you got a new ASTRO-25 Spectra... you will need to contact your local Motorola Authorized Dealer with the model number of the radio to get the RSS for this radio. The older RSS's were written for the original ASTRO Spectra's.... They do not work on an ASTRO-25 model.

I didn't think any of the new ASTRO-25 gear was on eBay yet,.. if this is indeed what you got, you got a good thing indeed. Hope you got a good price, since those babies are EXPENSIVE.

The older DOS RSS *will* work with ASTRO25 radios. I've seen codeplugs myself. VHF/UHF ASTRO25 is so new it really wouldn't have fallen into the DOS RSS period since CPS had been issued beforehand. But for ASTRO25 for 800 DOS RSS will work provided it wasn't programmed with anything newer.

The radio has been reprogrammed with a newer version than what you have. CPS1.x is definitely outdated. I think the newest is 3.x. There's no way to tell what version it was written to unless you can read the codeplug, which is redundant, but it's the only way.

If you bought this radio to passively monitor an APCO-25 Trunked system you're going to have one hell of a time doing it since there is no option other than to affiliate. If the radio can't it will go out of range.

The latest versions of ASTRO25 and ASTRO CPS is 4.

The last version of DOS RSS was 9.05.

I doubt that it's an ASTRO25 Spectra. Probably just a regular IMBE capable astro spectra.

Hope you know what you're doing with that radio.

Best bet is to buy the latest version of CPS from Motorola. You should have no problems reading the radio.

XTS3k, Astro saber, Astro Spectra 4.01.04
XTS5k, XTS2.5k, XTL they are up to 5.00.00

you need to know the version that it was last programmed with, and use that or higher.
