• The color means the radio is “intrinsically-safe”

As stated before the yellow color alone doesn't mean anything, for a radio to be FM/IS rated it must have the green dot and FM logo on the radio and battery.

• The yellow housing is only available on ruggedized models

Again stated as before, you can get high-intensity yellow on any radio (normal or ruggedized). The color is designed to make the radio more visible if dropped.

Moderating this thread reminds me of my mother saying, "You boys are getting a little rough tonight.....I'll let you watch a little more RadioReference TV before the lights get turned off....but only if you're good. If I have to come back in this room, I'm shutting everything off."

F.A.S.T. = Firefighter Assist and Search Team

Firefighter Assist and Search Team - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In FDNY parlance, "truck" = "ladder". A "FAST truck" is the ladder company* assigned to the incident that acts as the F.A.S.T. on scene.

FDNY: Frequently Asked Questions

* While it's normally a truck company assigned, it can also be an engine company or other unit if need be.

My father retired from Ladder 16 years ago. I asked him and he didn't know.

Tnx,

Mike

FAST/RIT units are a relatively recent innovation, like having FD Safety specialists at major incidents.

Ok, I posted as if I knew something about yellow radios, but my knowledge was over 20 years old. In my hey day when we received 1500 of the first XTS3000 digital radios produced for our new system in the very early 1990’s, all of the intrinsically safe ones were delivered with a yellow housing. Obviously, that is not the case across the board or currently.

After my initial post and the follow up comments I have learned it may have been a specification in our particular order that all of the intrinsically safe radios have the yellow housing, (for easy identification) just as NYFD apparently specifies that a particular version of the XTS radios that are going to be used by the FAST trucks have a yellow housing.

A Yellow radio case is nothing more than an option that a customer can specify and be used for strictly appearance sake or can be used to designate whatever a particular agency wants it to.

This forum is very educational – thank you for the chance to learn something new today!
