Hi everyone, I've been enjoying reading these forums!

Could someone point me to where I can find information on how to use squelch tone decoding? I've got this feature on my new 246T but don't understand how to program or use this feature and I can't find anything in the forum. The 246T has got a search function when I get to the tone decode part of inputting a new frequency or I can put them in manually. Are they necessary? How can I find and use them? Thanks in advance.

Some background info-

Tones, both PL, and DPL,.. also properly known as CTCSS, and CDCSS, are used on professional radio equipment to prevent users from interfering with other users on a given frequency.....

Scanners that are capable of decoding these tones, can iether automatically decode upon recieving them along with a programmed freq/freq found in searching, or tones can be programmed in on individual freqs to prevent you from hearing interference from multiple users on a freq. There should be a good description in your owners manual of how to program in the tones on chan per chan basis.

You now are a valuable source of information with a scanner that can decode tones.... you can verify usage of freqs vias tones,... or provide correct info on the tones in use. Welcome to the world of scanning. :)

thanks!

thanks for the info. i have a basic understanding of what these are used for but my owners manual didn't help me figure out how to use (or not use) the codes when programming in a freq.

from reading the forum i gather that if i set to off, all transmission on that freq will be received. set to search, i'm guessing means all will be received and the code will be displayed. if i want to filter and only receive a specific codes/transmissions, then i enter them in or set specific ones to lock out. does that sound right or am i way off? maybe i should take this over to the 246T discussion.

While I'm new to the board, I'm not really new to scanning, but all my scanners are older models that don't deal with squelch codes so I'm a total newbie in that department. Glad to be on board here.

To keep from hearing interference on a freq, yes, its good to progrm in the tones on a per chan basis. Example (NOTE this is on a PRO-92 but the same principal applies)

Chan- 101 Freq- 155.4000 MHz Tone- 88.7 PL Aplha Tag- AMR-Jackson
Chan- 102 Freq- 155.4000 MHz Tone- D411 DPL Alpha Tag- KDMC-EMS

This allows me to only hear AMR on the first, and KDMC on the second, without confusion. If I was to really dig deep into tone controlling... I could even seperate every ER in my state by Tones as almost every one of them uses 155.3400 MHz (Our statewide ER Net) with a different tone.

If you need more info on playing around with using tones in such a case, I will be glad to assist in any way I can.

Have fun

More correctly said, it keeps user from HEARING each other while their mic is on the hook. CTCSS/CDCSS does nothing to reduce interference, aside from local audio 'interference' coming from your speaker.
