That is a very great question! While I cannot think of an "easy" way to connect it, I would say if you put enough ingenuity into it, you can probably find a way. I'm certain you've heard the phrase, "never say never!"

I believe it would probably take a lot of work, but if Bluetooth or Wifi came into play, it's possible. I know more and more radios are coming out with the ability to pair Bluetooth devices, but at this point it is probably for more audio related purposes. But given enough time I would expect to see someone develop the ability to send and receive data too.

What app are you running on your iPad?

I use the Black Cat Systems "SSTV Slow Scan TV" app -> https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/sstv-slow-scan-tv/id387910013?mt=8

It works great. I just hold the mic near my radio's speaker and it decodes the data.. I even use it in the car with my mobile. I've decoded SSTV images while I was driving.. (Although they tend to be very noisy due to road noise).

Below is a shot of my iPad Pro 9.7 after it just received an image on 14.230 Mhz. It was propped up on top of my IC-7600's speaker opening.

(Edit.. Just looked back at your second message and see you're using this app.. Where are you listening for SSTV signals? Are you sure they are SSTV signals? You might be hearing something else in which case nothing will decode)
..

I have used the Black Cat SSTV app on my iPhones and iPads and it works rather well by placing the Apple device near the receiver speaker. From 14.230 on HF to the ISS on 145.800 MHz.

A search on Youtube will provide you with some SSTV signal examples. Just decode one or more of those to ensure things are working. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sstv

If that does not work, my guess is that your microphone is blocked by a case of some kind, or perhaps your microphone is broken. Test it out on the built in recording app. You could of course remove the app and re-install if everything else you try does not work.
