Oh, there's a better antenna than stock. Question is, which one?

What are you wanting to listen to? If you're primarily monitoring an 800 mhz system, a tuned 800 mhz antenna would be much better, and you can get one off the peg at RatShack. But if you're not monitoring 800 mhz, but rather VHF and UHF conventional stuff, RS has a "deluxe" type antenna that's good for that purpose, or you could get the metal extendable antenna that you can "tune" for your desired band. Either of those would be better choices than stock for UHF and VHF.

And there are literally dozens of companies making scanner antennas, so do a Google search sometime when you have half a day to sort through them.

Almost anything is better than the stock antenna.

I recommend an antenna manufactured by Diamond. The model number escapes me, but if you do a search on the forums for 'Diamond antenna' I feel certain you will find the information you desire.

Diamond antenna

Many of us use the Diamond RH77. I have 2 and they're very good. For 800mhz use the shack's 800 duck. That should be all you need. Try the Diamond first, and get the shack 800 if your reception is weak with the diamond in the 800 range. Austin

The Diamond RH77CA is a very good antenna for UHF and VHF. Public Service in both bands are double what your stock duckie will recieve. But, as mentioned, it isn't much for 800 mhz. I've found it does decent on 800 mhz however, on my Pro-528. From Irvine, KY, I was able to recieve Lexington, KY's EDACS system, and thats about 25 miles away as the crow flies. I was also able to pull in Richmond, KY's Motorola Type II system, which is about 15 miles away.

With the stock duckie, Lexington's VHF Police did come in, but it was scratchy, and the audio was low. I threw on the RH77CA, and the hash and trash was gone. Audio seemed to improve a small amount as well.

For 800 mhz trunking, and even 800 mhz conventional, I'll have to give my award to the RadioShack 800 though. It's a decent antenna for VHF and UHF, but it really shines on 800 mhz.

The only downfall is, the RS 800 is almost deaf on VHF aircraft. The RH77CA is a proven air-band antenna..
