New to this streaming thing. Is there a place I can stream my scanner to on the web that i can actually point anybody to and say "go here to listen to my scanner" without paying an arm and a leg? I mean live, not recorded audio, I am willing to stream mine 24\7 but only if it will be live. I want to provide a way for my neighbors and anyone else intrested to listen to what is going on in the neighborhood.

You can do it for free here - http://www.streamwebtown.com/index.php

It is how I am providing the stream in my sig and is 100% free. There are many others here using the same free service.

It should be noted that not only is it free, it is simple to set up and simple for end users to listen.

Totally agree. Question is, are the streaming sources published by them or is it up to the 'publisher' to publish their source?

I think it depends on where you host your feed. IBN does a good job of advertising their feeds on their website as well as on Yahoo groups. Also, if you have an active event you can announce what is happening on the TeamSpeak server and in their dispatch room. Depending on how many people are online (at the time of this writing, there are 191 users on the server) you can get quite a number of listeners jump into your channel when something interesting is happening. Yesterday when I had a gas line rupture, after making the announcement there were 10 people that started to listen in within minutes.

I believe if you use streamwebtown, you can advertise your feed on websites such as this as well as other scanner forums.

My best promotion has been locally in the forum for the daily newspaper or the local government discussion forum.

Okay, I have a recorded session and have played around with it a bit. I have no problem 'advertising' my session with the appropriate people.

I'd like to stream this to anyone connecting to the publishing point - the session starts at beginning of file and ends at the end. The listener may want to replay the complete stream/file, so them clicking play should start at the beginning (unless they had only paused it). Ideally, the listener shouldn't have to download/install anything to listen to the stream, nor should I have to keep some software running on my desktop.

IBN: it has a file upload location, I've just registered. I gather that the listener will have to install the TeamSpeak client software, how can this be avoided?
SWT: how do I upload and stream the file without having to keep WME running on my desktop?

You can run an Icecast server on your machine in the System Tray if you have Windoze (you can even run it as a service if you terminate the program without killing the server). Icecast will "serve" files (like On Demand) and will facilitate the functionality you desire. If your file is in .mp3 format (you never said what format it is in), just about ANY media player should play it without any additional software to download.

Icecast is a great little media server, but it is not nearly as user friendly as WME. Icecast has great documentation and with a little experimenting you'll get what you were looking for.

Here is an example of the funtionality I described. It's about a minute long and is a scanner recording of the dispatch for a homebuilt helicopter crashing into a house. You should be able to "click and play".

Thanks for those pointers Tweekerbob!

What I gather from your suggestion is that with either one of them (Icecast or WME), my computer is essentially the server streaming out content to anyone connecting to a 'published stream'. Icecast has the extra benefit of running as a service so that my wife/son logging on is not a problem.

I am running Vista on my main computer at home, and it goes into sleep states on inactivity so that won't work. I'll reserruct an old machine to run continuously.

Can't you go in and change that to where it won't go to sleep??

Here's a program that I came across yesterday. It is similar to TeamSpeak however the interface looks more like an instant messenger program. You also will have the ability to have multiple rooms open. So you could be feeding your scanner in one room and then listening to several other rooms at the same time. When you create your voice room, you are given 200 slots at no charge.

I did a test yesterday running both TS as well as this program side by side and was told that the audio quality was quite good. Here is the URL if you would like to take a look at the software:

http://www.getgsc.com/

If anyone wants to hear the audio quality, I will have my scanner feeding for the rest of the day. Once you have the software installed, the auto join URL is gsc://join:11067/
The feed is also on the IBN TeamSpeak server so you can get a comparison of the two streaming methods.

Yes, I can. But I also have the rest of the family sharing it and I'd rather avoid them accidentally closing the app, etc. Having a dedicated machine to do it will work better.

OB, it looks like you have the connection "PUSH"ing to a Windows Media Server instead of having the listeners "PULL" it from you. There should have been a screen when you ran the wizard that would display these PUSH and PULL options.

Pulling is when you are the server and Pushing is when you want to uplink to real Windows Media Server.
