• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

What's the difference??
How does it happen??
If a radio is stunned, is it dead forever? Killed?

Thanks guys.

The only system I know of that supports stun and kill is PassPort trunking. Basically, one is temporary and the other requires a trip to the manufacturer to reset (ala Motorola).

For Motorola there is only selective inhibit, which turns your radio in to a brick and requires it to be sent to Motorola. That's true if it was programmed with CPS; if it was done with RSS you can read and reprogram it.

EDACS is similar to Motorola. I'm not sure how permanent the feature is.

Can the selective inhibit be done from a manager's radio, or does it need to be done at the dispatch console? How is the radio to be inhibited identified? Sorry for my being so naive.

A console or a systems terminal. It can't be performed directly from a subscriber radio.

There are a variety of ways a radio can be identified. Everything goes to a log. It's all about how you parse it and what you're looking for.

keep in mind wayne, that certain new icom radios can reportedly send the MDC1200 inhibit command directly from the radio...

True, but we're in the Trunking forum. ;)

MDC is definitely underated anymore. It's a pretty decent protocol for more than just PTT-ID.

The Passport Stun and Kill commands can only be sent from the NTS commander software while logged into the site remotely or directly.

The stun command just disables the radio on that system, when it tries to register it shows disabled and honks at you (Waris series radios) but will still operate on other channels. This is usually done for seasonal customers or customers who own their radio but choose to discontinue their service.

The kill command turns the radio into a nice door stop and is usually reserved for stolen radios. It could also be used for rogue users but with Passport needing a MIN number (Mobile Identification Number) along with ESN validation the chances are pretty slim.

Isn't there an option that by default any radio not in the database registering with the system is automatically stunned?

The Jaguar700 can have a suicide command sent to it - even the manufacture can not revive the radio EVER.

Stunn & inhibit are basically the same thing - recoverable. Suicide is just that, the radio commits hari cari.

I believe so.

That makes sense ONLY if it is stolen - from what I hear on RR Jaguars are NOT cheap.

EDACS appears to support two levels ... inhibit and kill. There's an un-inhibit command but no un-kill command. I thought the "kill" command nuked the radio's profile but didn't physically damage the radio (but, hey, I've been wrong before).

The Icoms that have over the air stun/kill are using the Transcrypt module to do this. The radio itself will probably still work with a analog program.

In EDACS, in the CSD (Communications System Director), you can specify a radio to not be valid on a system which means the radio can still rx fine but when it tries to transmit, it gets denied and no working channel is assigned. You can also send a unit disable command from the CSD. This essentially turns the radio into a brick. You can turn the radio off and on and that is all it will do. If the situation warrants, you can also re-enable the radio from the CSD. The only other option is to have the radio reprogrammed. Neither affects the radio's personality data. If the radio is feature-encrypted for it, the CSD can send the radio a temporary list of up to 8 TG's. This is called Dynamic Regroup Once again, the original programming is left intact. This is useful for situations where a group of radios needs to have a TG or several TGs that they don't normally have. When they are finished, the radios are then "ungrouped" from the CSD.
