Here's another suggestion for GRE... Since they won't be sold thru RS...
Please include the nessessary accessories..
Unidens have things like the AC adapter /charger/computer cable/ batteries
all in the box... The average purchaser needed to buy $30-40.00 worth of accessories from the RS "wall" .....
When GRE made the RCA scantrak 61xx series of handheld scanners for RCA in the late 90's (rebadged pro-62's or whatever), they Did include the AC adapter in the box at the time, unlike the RS equivelent ...

We do not yet know that they will not be sold through Radio Shack. If you look at the pic of the guy on here that got to play with one the last letter on it is K. There is no K in GRE or GRECOMM.

What?!? Where did you read that? The latest information we had was that GRE was going to sell them independent of Radio Shack as GRECOM, without the Radio Shack logo.
The model numbers are here: http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/GRE_Radios

The picture you saw from the Dayton Hamvention was a prototype using a PRO-97 chassis.

I read the information in an email I received back from RS. The whole "RS isn't going to sell scanners any more" didn't make to much sense to me, so I sent an email to RS asking about it. RS stated that the replacements for the Pro 97/96 are in production and if all goes well, they should be released in the 4th quarter. The way I understand it is that GRE will sell the new radios branded GRE to other retailers.

Well that picture looks nothing like the 97 chassis. Number 1 the screen is below the speaker where the 97 (have one in front of me) is above it. There are quite a few different buttons (in different places).

Now the 300 looks just like the 97.

Care to share that email?

Things like power supplies, batteries, antennae (OK, I'm exaggerating now) should not be called "accessories" in the first place. Accessory implies that it's extra and not essential to using the unit. The parts that Radio Shack does not include are necessary items for using their portable scanners.

My 2 cents.

I will pay more for a radio that does not include "Radio Shack" or "Pro-xxxx". I hate buying rebranded items. Pagers was a big one for me in the early 90s.

I second the motion that the scanner should come with everything needed to run it. I mean Uniden had their act together when they put out the 396. The 396 included the software, a charger, programming cable and even came with rechargeable batteries! Talk about a deal.

I'll add one, since I didn't see it specifically covered in the GRE announcements - allow users to program 225-400 mhz in 12.5 khz steps. This is essential to being able to do 380 Mhz trunking, something that is growing across the country. I know that the trunking tables for these scanners is not tied to the frequency (as it is now), but that's only half the battle.

I'm the opposite - i'll gladly have a "Radio Shack" label on the front if I can get a scanner from them on sale at $50 or $100 off.

since we're adding suggestions....

I have both a Pro96 and a 396t.
I like the belt clip on the 396t a lot more.
I would like to have the same or a similar belt clip on the PSR600.

If that is the case and GRE sells their brand to other retailers and have a solid warranty I could live with the *other retailer* has made a sale.
GRE is a reliable company and is here to stay, IS Radio Shack?

Do you mean the PSR500? The 500 is the digital hand held radio. The 600 is a base/mobile radio. You don't need a belt clip for that.

Erik,

I am glad I ran across this. This explains (at least I think) the confusion.

RS many months ago stated that they indeed had replacements in the pipeline for the problems of both the 97 and 96 families of scanners (no re-banding support for one, 700 MHz trunking problem for the other). To anyone wanting to know, I cannot provide backup for that statement, but it is accurate. Now GRE announces (and shows them at Dayton) these new scanners and at the same time indicates to the people who they talk to that RS has not picked them up as a branded item. Your email reply (although you have not shared its exact contents) does not seem to be in contravention to either of those positions. Consider this, the replacements for the Pro-97 and Pro-96 families could very well be coming from another vendor (the most recent scanners in the RS line up are Uniden produced); and GRE may well be selling these through a distribution market that may indeed include RS (without the brand). After going back and checking, I saw no post from anyone who might have an "inside track" that suggested RS was getting out of the scanner market at all, just that they were not going to sell these new GRE scanners as a RS brand item.

I was wondering the same thing. If indeed Radio Shack sent an email with that comment, it could mean that Uniden OEM is producing new radios for Radio Shack for the fourth quarter.

It may have started in the Dayton 07' news bit that Scanner_freak posted: http://radioreference.com/forums/showpost.php?p=527054&postcount=8

As for Radio Shack getting out of the scanner buisness, I do not think it will happen unless the corporation goes out of business, or sellls off to another company, but time will tell.

And also the ability to search in 25, 50, & 100 KHz steps for fast searching of the airband (w/o those 12.5 increments).
