If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Although the programming S/W for the RD-5R provided by Radioddity is very comprehensive it still leaves it up the user to enter all analog AND digital channel info manually. Is Radioreference planning to support downloading from its database to this new family of analog/digital radios? If not, does anyone know of a third party provider that can relieve us of the one-by-one programming burden? I do understand that support for this new family of radio might take time. I want to have access to it as soon as it's available. :)

RadioReference only supplies the Database. It's up to the software developer to add support for it.

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes, I understand your point. It is a coordinated effort between the S/W developer and RadioReference. There is a list of supported S/W. Is there support for the complex digital modes for other dual mode xcvrs? I would also like to know if RadioReference has the capability and the intention to support such programming platforms when/if they are developed.

The second part of my question was to ask if there are OTHER programming S/W that support these new DMR radios that can eliminate or reduce the need for manual programming. So far, searching the internet has been fruitless. It would be nice if there was a CHIRP-like program that provides access to external databases like, but not necessarily, RadioReference. I also understand this capability will probably take some time to mature. Let's hope it doesn't take too long.

In lieu of this database capability, it seems the only option is to seek predefined Code Plugs and copy/edit as necessary.
Any additional thoughts?

Actually it's not a coordinated effort. Like I said before, RadioReference only supplies the Database and a way of retrieving the information. It's up to the software developer to figure out how to get that information into the radio they're trying to support. Uniden and Whistler retrieve the Database on a regular basis and then massage the data for use in their products. Any other software developer would do the same.

Where are you seeing this list of supported software and what do you consider complex digital modes? The database already has a Mode column which supports all the modes I can think of.

...which unfortunately doesn't cover your radio. However as Chirp covers a great many budget transceivers, you might be better off asking in their mailing list to see if the authors can help...Mike

Thanks, MtnBiker, for all that additional info. It may be just a matter of time before some developer avail themselves of your capability. It would certainly benefit this current surge of interest in the digital world.

I do see the listing options for Conventional DMR under System-Wide Reports. I don't suppose there a method for exporting select records in a format capable of incorporating into a Code Plug. Looks like a cut-n-paste job.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.
It wouldn't surprise me that I've missed some of RadioReference's capabilities. I think I'll dig a little deeper before I bug you again.

I do have another question about Code Plug format (file type) but I'll initiate another thread for that one.

You will need to contact Radioddity/Baofeng about firstly either redesign of the CPS to support full C&P or import from other sources, or allowing 3PP soucing such as CHIRP to be worked in. One of the Radioddity reps is always on the RD-5R Facebook group. Jasmine Chow. As one of the admins for that group put an app in to join and I can confirm you almost instantly most days.
